“It would make bigger targets putting the two of you together. You need to be separated again. Also, you know Morgan, she won’t run.”

“You’re right.” Brooklyn sounded defeated.Jameson shared the sentiment.Morgan was as stubborn as they came. She would never agree to go into hiding and endanger Brooklyn, nor would she want to be a third wheel.“So what do we do?I can’t stand the thought of hiding and something happening to her again. What if this time it’s worse?”

The only way to protect her was for her to stay put and him watch over her.Morgan would refuse WITSEC, and she would never run away.“I’ll watch over her.”

“How are you going to protect her?You two don’t have an easy relationship right now.”

“I’ve actually been trying to get back together with her.So it provides the perfect excuse.”

“She’s not going to like being duped.”

“It’s not duping. It’s two birds, one stone.I’m not using her or lying per se.I can protect her while we get to know each other.” It was quite brilliant of a plan if he did say so himself.

“I can’t say I agree to this, but if you promise your intentions are pure and you really do intend to get her back and not use her, then I’ll agree to this.”

“Thanks.” Brooklyn’s support of them getting back together was huge.He had always liked Brooklyn, though she had always been quiet and reserved because of her insecurity over her eyes, but he always enjoyed her company. If she supported the relationship, that would give him a leg up with Morgan.“One more thing, Brooklyn.”

“What?”

“I don’t want her knowing about Lawry.”

“Why?” she asked, confused.

He knew it was asking a lot to have Brooklyn withhold information from Morgan.“She’ll become more resistant to having me around or any help, telling all who will listen she can take care of herself. These people aren’t anything like Lawry. They are ruthless and will kill anyone who gets in their way.” Morgan was tough, but she didn’t stand a chance against them alone.

“I don’t like lying to Morgan,” Brooklyn remarked hesitantly.Jameson hated putting her in the position, but he needed her agreement.

“It’s only temporary. It’s not lying but omitting. It’s for Morgan’s safety.I don’t want anything happening to her.”

“I’ll agree then, for her safety,” Brooklyn added as if she needed that dictation.“I’m going to guess you don’t want me telling her I’m out of town either.”

“The fewer people who know where you are, the better. You are the one they are after.” Brooklyn had been the witness and worked for Banner. She would have the most knowledge.

“I won’t let anyone come near you,” Drake vowed.

“That’s sweet and all,” Brooklyn said but didn’t sound impressed her boyfriend just vowed to keep her safe.“What do I tell Morgan if she asks where I am?We talk all the time.I’m not a very good liar.”

A vacation would raise flags. She’d been in hiding for over a week. She’d been on vacation.“If she asks, tell her you needed to go back up north for some interviews for the case.”

“While I don’t approve of lying to Morgan, I understand the necessity of it.”

“Thank you, Brooklyn.I don’t like lying about it either, but it’s for the best.” Morgan wouldn’t be happy if she ever found out, but it was for her protection.

“Well, good luck,” Drake added.

“Thanks.” He was going to need it.“Drake, I’ll be in touch.”

“We won’t be anywhere remote in case you need backup.I won’t say more than that.Bye, brother.Stay safe.”

“Thanks.You too.”

Chapter 9

Morgan walked into Bridges one minute before five. She didn’t want to appear overly eager or look like she was jumping to his tune.If they were going to be business partners, she needed to lay some ground rules down from the beginning.

“May I help you?” the hostess asked. She was a young woman, in her early twenties.

“I’m meeting someone.” Her eyes scanned the open restaurant and recognized Simon’s solid frame in the bar area.“I just saw him, thank you.”
