“Hmm,” was all she could think to say.She hated over-privileged pricks like this.Had money to throw away on frivolous things when there were so many needy, starving families in the world.

“How long have you lived in the area?” He looked up from his glass, his eyes turning calculating.“I assume with you walking to work this morning that you live nearby.”

“A few years now,” was all she replied, not confirming the proximity.

“You don’t like to talk about yourself, do you?” He cocked his head to the side as if studying her.Looking for a chink in her armor. She wasn’t going to give it to him.

“No, do you always ask such personal questions to your realtor?” she fired back.

“No, just damsels I save.”

“Do that a lot, do you?” She cracked a smile. As much as she didn’t like talking about herself, she did find him funny and quick-witted.Only Brooklyn and Jameson understood her sometimes dry sense of humor.“Rescue damsels.”

“Every other week.Good thing for you, I was in town.”

“They bumped into me.The only casualty was my coffee.”

“You were very upset about that I recall.” He nodded, and a look came into his eyes as if he was reliving the memory.

“I like my coffee,” she defended. It had been such a waste.

“Duly noted.”

“Where are you from, Simon?”

“Ah…” He held his glass up, pointing his index finger at her.“If you get to ask me personal questions, I expect the same favor.”

Morgan pursed her lips and had to think about his offer. She didn’t like talking about herself, but she was curious to learn about him.“Very well, but not about my family.” She didn’t want his sympathy because her parents were dead. The only family she had left was her estranged brother she only saw once a year.

“Fair enough.I’m from Los Angeles.Am I allowed to ask about friends?Ex-boyfriends?Or there is always the safe topic, we can talk about the weather.” He wagged his eyebrows as if it were something scandalous.

“Good god no,” she laughed.“Definitely not the weather.I only have one friend, and I prefer not to think about my ex.” Even if he crept into her mind more times than she liked to admit.Especially here lately. The man was becoming a regular in her life.Hopefully, now that Brooklyn was back and safe, she wouldn’t have to talk to him anymore.

“Only one friend?”

“Sometimes one is all you need.” She shrugged.Even Jameson had given her grief that Brooklyn was her only friend. There she went again thinking about him.“Brooklyn and I have been friends since grade school. We just instantly clicked.”

“You two sound close.”

“We are,” she admitted.Morgan didn’t know what she would do if she didn’t have Brooklyn in her life. She didn’t want to think about when Brooklyn married and moved away or started a family and had less time for her.Morgan shouldn’t be selfish about Brooklyn’s time.Just because she was unlucky in the love department didn’t mean Brooklyn should suffer.

“I’ve never had friends like that.I envy you.Having money, people see you as an object instead of a person.Someone to get close to in order to get to your bank account.”

If the man could drop two million on a house in the middle of nowhere, he must be loaded, not that money impressed her.It was a person’s character.

“I can’t imagine what that’s like.Never knowing who your friends are and who’s just using you.So you don’t have any friends?”

“None that I would ever call true friends.”

“That’s sad.Everyone should have at least one friend.Someone they can rely on to talk about their problems or help in a situation.Do you have any siblings?”

“A sister, but we don’t get along.”

“So no friends, no close siblings.Extra lonely.”

“I’ve gotten used to it.” He shrugged again as if it wasn’t a big deal.“Does your friend live close by you?”

Morgan’s senses went on alert. Why was he so interested in Brooklyn? Why was he interested in where she lived? It seemed more than just curiosity. It was enough to raise red flags.
