He held it in his hand, pressed against his leg as he approached Morgan.“Morgan,” Jameson called out, but she didn’t seem to hear him.The jogger continued coming at her.

He reached out to touch Morgan on the shoulder when she whipped around and drove her fist into his face.He stumbled back with a curse, covering his face with both hands. If it didn’t hurt like hell, he’d be so damn proud of her.Later, he could congratulate her.For now, he couldn’t ignore the throbbing pain, that was until she raised her knee ready to knee him between the legs.Jameson dodged the blow and stepped out of firing range.

“Dammit, Morg. It’s me,” Jameson cursed. In hindsight, he should have announced himself, but it was too late now.

Jameson watched Morgan squint in the darkness. He knew when she recognized him under the lamplight. Her whole demeanor changed. She was no longer in fight mode. That was a good sign.

“What the hell, Jameson? You just scared ten years off of my life.”

Jameson looked back up the street but didn’t see the jogger. He tucked his knife in his back pocket so Morgan didn’t see it.“Sorry, I shouldn’t have snuck up on you like that.”

“You think?” she replied in a ‘duh’ tone.“What are you doing here?” she snapped, her voice shaking mostly in anger.

He wanted to ask where she’d been, but he knew it wasn’t any of his business, and she would be sure to point that out to him.

Jameson stood up to his full height, which was several inches over six foot. All the men in his family were tall.Which was funny given how short his parents were.Well, average size like Morgan. She wasn’t short by any means.Morgan was six foot. She used to tell him how excited she was that she could wear high heels and not be taller than him.The top of her head would come up to his chin.

He always liked her in heels.Like now. They showcased her long, trim legs.He recalled all the times he’d had them wrapped around his waist. The extra height made lovemaking more interesting. It put her at the perfect height so he could just lift her leg and slide right in.

“Well?” she prompted when he still didn’t answer. She crossed her arms over her chest and glared at him.

Jameson cleared his throat, trying to stay on the topic at hand.“I was trying to catch you at your office, but you’d already left.”

“Why?” Her eyes suddenly widened in shock.“Oh my god, is Brooklyn okay?Has there been a break in the case?Is she okay?”

“Morg, slow down. There haven’t been any new developments.” Other than Lawry being dead and now an assassin after her and Brooklyn.

“Oh.” Her whole body drooped at the news before she looked at him skeptically.“Then why were you looking for me?”

He held up his hand and noticed it was empty. He looked around—ah, there it was.Jameson picked up the flowers he’d dropped when she’d punched him and held them up for her. They were a little smashed, and a few were missing petals.

Morgan looked at them as if he were trying to hand her a poisonous snake.

“Here.” He tried handing them to her.

“Thanks.” She slowly took them from him and dipped her head down to smell them. They were her favorites, daffodils and baby’s-breath.She looked up at him, a small puckering of confusion between her eyebrows.

Jameson wanted to smooth the frown with his thumb.“They’re your favorite.Or at least they used to be.” She could have changed since they’d dated.

“You remembered.” She seemed baffled that he would remember something like that.He never forgot a moment of their time together.Everything she ever told him.The good and the bad.He had just become neglectful of her when his caseload started growing more.

They stood there in front of her building just staring at one another.“Give me another chance, Morgan.” Morgan blinked as if pulled from whatever magnet had been holding them in place.

He knew better than to push her too quickly, but he’d gotten caught in the moment staring into her emerald-colored eyes.“I need to go inside.Good night, Jameson.”

“Morgan, please.”

Morgan looked away from him and sighed heavily before glaring back at him.“Why?Why now?”

What to say that wouldn’t come out wrong? He thought about spinning some bullshit answer, but he’d vowed to be more honest and forthcoming with her.A new start for them.“What happened to you made me face some harsh facts.”

“And what’s that?” She raised an arched eyebrow, not looking happy at his omission.

“I don’t want to live the rest of my life without you.”

Morgan’s eyes narrowed to slits.“It took my kidnapping for you to realize that?”

“No,” he quickly denied.“I’ve always known that.” It just took her kidnapping for him to get off his ass and do something about it.
