“I’ll have this resolved soon.I could just take her out, but you want these deaths to look like accidents. Those take time.” They were also easier when a cop wasn’t following her around all the time.Lawry had left that little detail out.

“Just make it quick. What about the file?”

“It wasn’t there.”

“Damn Lawry,” his boss hissed.“Waste of time.” He mumbled something else but must have pulled the phone from his face or covered it because he didn’t hear.

“He was a loose end that needed to be snipped.” He wouldn’t forget how Lawry had begged for his life before he’d plunged the needle into him and killed him.He wished he could have made it a messier death, but he was instructed to make it look like an inside job to keep the cops guessing.

“Any luck on the other woman?”

“She’s gone underground.I’ve checked her place more than once, but there is no sign of her.Morgan’s tight-lipped about her. What do you want me to do?”

“Have you checked the cop’s place?”

“I did, but it’s empty.” Literally. The guy didn’t have more than basic furniture inside. It looked like he didn’t even live in the house. The fridge was bare.It looked like Jameson hadn’t even been there in a while. There were only so many places that file could be.“Lawry swore it would be in evidence. The only place left to look is the cop’s desk or most likely his person. If I have to find it on his person, it’s going to get bloody.”

The only way Jameson would allow him close enough to him to search would be if Jameson was a corpse. And Jameson was already paranoid of him.He could slip him some of the poison meant for the girl, but that would raise an alarm, just like his boss didn’t want.

“Check his desk first. If it’s not there, take care of him.”

“I’ll be in touch when it’s done.” The man hung up, a cold smile on his face as his gaze traveled up to the woman’s window.Soon.She’d only bought herself a small reprieve.

Chapter 13

Morgan felt tired and cranky the next morning. She’d hardly slept a wink last night.Even a cup of coffee couldn’t help improve her attitude. She kept replaying her conversation with Jameson in her head.

He’d looked so earnest when he’d asked her to give him another chance.A part of her wanted to, but then she remembered all the times he’d put his career first and her second.Too many times he’d told her he’d call and forgot.

Morgan was scared to get her heart broken again. No, she wouldn’t put herself through that again.

Morgan stepped outside her building and saw Jameson leaning against his Jeep. She hadn’t noticed how good he looked in blue jeans and a tight black shirt. She’d been too upset with him last night, and it had been too dark to pay much attention. Now she couldn’t miss a detail in full light. His soft hair flipped to the side.

Had he been sitting there all night? She was shocked, to be honest. She’d thought his words of waiting for her were just that—words—and yet, here he was.

Jameson has lost his mind with worry for you.

Morgan wouldn’t be swayed. She had to remain firm in her decision. She averted her gaze and headed down the sidewalk toward the back parking lot.She heard footsteps coming up behind her.She should have known she couldn’t escape him that easily.

“I’m shocked you’re still around,” she remarked without looking at him.

“I told you, I’m not quitting.”

“You’re turning into a stalker. That is not the way to get me back.” Okay, so it was working a little. She was surprised no one had called the police on him for staking out the front of her building so much.

He stepped in front of her, forcing her to stop or run into him.“Tell me what to do then.”

“There’s nothing you can do.” She forced herself to look him in the eye.As a cop, he was trained to look for signals. If he sensed there was a way to get back into her good graces, he would exploit it.

Jameson didn’t look upset by her pronouncement. He grinned as if it were a challenge.Uh oh.How could she forget for a second what a bloodhound this man was? When he was on something, he never gave up, and she’d just given him a challenge.“There is.I messed up, but I’m going to make it right.”

“I’m going to be late,” she stated as an excuse to get away from him.

“You’re right down the road.”

“I’m not going into the office.” She didn’t know why she was explaining herself to him.She didn’t owe him anything but her disdain.

“Well, then I’ll walk you to your car.” He waved his hand forward for her to walk ahead of him.
