Page 26 of Craving Morgan

Morgan walked briskly to her car, her bag clutched tightly to her right side.It was well past dark, and the only light was the lamplight at the corner of the parking lot and the front building lights. Not that she needed the light. She’d made this walk a million times since she’d moved here. She could do it blindfolded. However, she couldn’t shake a feeling of foreboding.

Maybe it was from all the stress with Brooklyn’s situation, her recent kidnapping, and her argument with Jameson. She was just out of sorts.

Morgan looked up and down the street as she crossed the small parking lot.The street was quiet. The only sound to be heard was her own breathing and the click-clack of her heels on the pavement.Normally she’d walk the few blocks home, but since she’d taken her car to the office, she needed to take it home.No sense in leaving it here over the weekend.

Morgan was halfway to her car when she heard something behind her.She cocked her head back slightly. It was footsteps. She didn’t think much of it until the footsteps sounded close together as if someone were walking fast.It could be a jogger.

Morgan cocked her head to the side as she listened to the steps getting closer. Were they getting faster or were her ears playing tricks on her?

Morgan slipped her hand in her bag for the can of mace she had purchased yesterday.Of course, it didn’t do her much good buried in the bottom of her giant tote bag.

There was no organization to the thing. She just threw random things in there. One time she found the TV remote in there.Luckily, she found the can of mace quickly as she picked up her pace. She would get into her car and lock the doors before anyone could get to her.

She reached for the door handle when a hand landed on her shoulder.Morgan whirled around, the can of pepper spray in her hand ready to press down on the trigger, when a voice halted her.

“Morgan, whoa, stop.” The man jumped back, hands up in surrender.

Morgan fell against her car feeling her heart in her throat.“Mr.Valentine.” Damn the man, he’d just scared ten years off of her life. Why did men keep sneaking up on her?

“Sorry, I didn’t mean to frighten you.”

“Frighten? You just took at least a year off of my life,” she accused, a hand placed over her galloping heart.

Simon dropped his hands to his sides now that he wasn’t in danger of getting maced.“I’ve been trying to catch you.Your secretary said you’ve been out all day.”

“I was.Why are you here now?” she wanted to know.It was unorthodox to have a client meeting her at her car at this hour.

“I was waiting for you.”

“So you thought you would hide in the bushes until I came out and sneak attack me at my work after eight o’clock at night?”

Simon looked around nervously.“I admit I was worried you might be avoiding me.”

If that was an apology, it was a terrible one.“And I can’t avoid you if you are physically here.”

Simon shrugged unapologetically.“I’ve told you before, when I want something, I go after it.”

“Including stalking people outside their work.” She had Jameson stalking her house and now Simon stalking her work. She had a lot of stalkers in her life. That wasn’t good.

“Stalking is a bit harsh.I came by hoping you were here.Did you like the flowers?” He grinned broadly as if she should be fawning at his feet for giving her such lavish flowers.

“They were very nice, thank you.” Even though she’d had them thrown out because she didn’t like their mixed scents.Jessica had taken some of the roses home.

“So do you?” he prompted.

“Do I what?” Morgan blinked, not following the question. She’d already said she liked the flowers.

“Accept my apology for my behavior last night.I can hold my liquor much better than that.I don’t know what happened.” He blinked, looking away in thought as if it had never happened before.

“Apology accepted,” she replied, easily ready to get this conversation over with.

“Good,” he cut in before she could continue.“Let’s get out of here.I know a great eatery and who knows after.Maybe dancing or something else.” He smiled wickedly and wagged his eyebrows.

Yeah, no thanks. She knew what the something else implied, and she had no intention of sleeping with the man, even if Jameson hadn’t come back into her life.

The guy was nice and good looking, but that was as far as that went. She had no desire for him.His aggressive attitude was fine for the workplace, but she didn’t like forceful men to date.

That was the one thing she had always appreciated about Jameson. He’d never made her do anything she didn’t want to do.He may have encouraged her, even teased her—like the time he’d tried to get her to make out with him in a squad car.She had said someone would think she was working off a ticket or something. He had picked on her, and she’d finally relented and kissed him.Which had led to other things, but that was later on and definitely not in a police car.
