“Does this have something to do with Lawry?”

What to say?Jameson wanted to keep things under wraps, but he owed his boss an answer.Jameson also trusted Frost’s instincts and advice.“It does.”

Frost looked around to make sure no one was paying them any attention.“Can you tell me anything?”

“Lawry was in deep with people.I haven’t figured out who yet. They made it look like he died of natural causes, but that wasn’t the case.He was tortured before he was killed to protect their secrets.”

“Shit, how does this involve you besides you being the arresting officer?”

“I have evidence that connects who he was working for.”

“Where is it?”

“I have it somewhere close. That’s why my desk and apartment were hit. They were looking for it.”

“You need to wrap this up quick, Jameson, before they get you.” Jameson didn’t worry about himself, but he did worry about Morgan and Brooklyn. They were the prime targets, but once Jameson started poking around, he would no doubt put a target on his own back.

“Yes, sir.Rick Banner is the key, I just haven’t figured out how yet.He wrote down the people involved, but it’s all in code.I’ve been to his apartment and office.I can’t find a connection to that kind of writing.” Then it hit him.Someone close to Banner might know.“But I think I might know someone who does.”

“Figure it out quick.I don’t want to have to work a crime scene with your body in it.”

“Yes, sir.” Jameson ran down to his car where he had the file stashed in his glove box.He pulled out his phone and called Drake.

“Did you find the guy already?” Drake asked, shocked.

Obviously, Brooklyn hadn’t told him about the fight this morning.“No, I need to speak with Brooklyn.”

“I’m not speaking to you,” he heard Brooklyn yelling from a distance.Drake probably had the phone on speaker, but she was far away.He should say he wasn’t surprised she was angry with him.He had hurt her best friend, but this wasn’t about Morgan.Well, not her feelings but keeping her alive.

“Brooklyn, I know I messed up with Morgan.”

“What is going on?” Drake asked, confused.

“Messed up?” she screeched, her voice sounded closer like she was marching over to him.“That’s like calling a ten-car pile-up a small accident. You lied to Morgan and made me do the same. You should have told her long before now.But no.”

“Brooklyn, stop.I fucked up.Royally.I get it, but this isn’t about my relationship or lack thereof with Morgan right now. It’s about keeping her alive.I need your help.”

There was a moment of silence.“What do you need?”

“You were Banner’s secretary.”

“Personal assistant,” she corrected.

Whatever. Some people and titles he would never understand, but right now it wasn’t important.“The file you had in your car, Banner wrote it in some kind of code.I need to know if you’ve ever seen anything like it before.”

“He did a lot of shorthand for notes, but without seeing it, I don’t know.”

Jameson pulled the phone from his ear and took a picture of one of the pages and texted it to Drake’s phone.“I just sent a text.Let me know if you can read any of it.”

“I will, but, Jameson, I want your promise on something,” she said, sounding grave, and he had a feeling he knew was it was about.

“What?”

“You make things right with Morgan.”

Not what he was expecting. He expected her to warn him off from her friend. To never talk to her again.

“Have I shocked you?”
