“Who are you here with? Are you lost?” I got curious.

“I’m here with my dad. I wanted to hide from him a bit. You know, the hide-and-seek game.” He started. “My dad plays with me all the time.”

“Oh, where’s he now?” I asked.

“He’s outside. He went to take an important call. My dad’s a good man.” He pointed to the door. He wasn’t giving up. It was like words would not finish for him.

“Oh! That’s great. You want to walk with me?” I asked. I could use his company while he waits for his dad.

“Yes!” He was excited to walk with me as if he knew me from somewhere. The bond was quick and smooth.

“Okay,” I smiled and pushed my cart forward while he walked behind me.

“You didn’t tell me your name, but I told you mine.” His tiny voice called my attention.

“Oh, right. You’ll have to guess.” I winked at him.

“I can do that.” He responded gleefully.

“Go on, then.” I urged him. I didn’t get a response from him. I waited another few seconds and still got no response. It was fishy; I thought he had run to hide. I turned to see what was going on and a horror met me right in the face.

I screamed at the top of my voice. My scream called attention to myself and Michael. He was on the ground struggling to breathe. I knew it was an asthma attack because I’d seen one before. I took off my jacket immediately and waved it over his face continuously to aid his breathing. He wasn’t getting better.

I tried first aid measures. I searched his pocket to see if he had his inhaler with him, but he didn’t.

“What’s going on here?” A man’s deep voice made me look up.“And where has this kid been!? His Dad has been looking for him.”

“Hello, why all these questions? Who are you? Are you a doctor?” I was panicking. My breath was shaking, and my voice followed suit.

“No, I’m not. I’m the manager.” He responded.

Michael was still struggling to breathe. I held him in my arms and sat on the floor. People gathered and panicked. Some took pictures like it would help the boy get better.

“What do we do, then?” My tone sounded arrogant, but he didn’t react to it. I guess he understood the heat of the moment.

“Anything we can do to help. I heard the scream and rushed down to check what it was.” He said. He too was panicking. He was huge, but the situation made him jump around like a child.

“How do I help?” He added.

“Do you know the boy’s father?” I asked.

“Yes, I do. He’s a customer of mine and he was just looking for his son a few minutes ago.” the manager responded.

“Where’s he? We need to call him right now. Find a way to call him now.” I was scared. Michael was still struggling to breathe.

The manager ran to the counter and was back in a few minutes. He finally got the number of the boy’s father. I didn’t know who it was, but I wanted him to be there in a matter of seconds.

While the manager was trying to explain the situation to him calmly, I shouted, “Get here now, your son is having an asthma attack.”

The manager then put the phone on loudspeaker so I could hear what the man was saying.

“Where are you guys now?” The man over the phone asked.

“At the store, you just left. Come back here now.”

“Okay, I’m on my way.” He said.

His voice was familiar, but I couldn’t place it. I thought of where I knew that voice, and it came to me.
