“Awesome!” I exclaimed. “So, it means I can visit the house from time to time, right?” I asked to confirm.

“Visit the house?” He asked. “No! That’s not possible.” He declined. He seemed uncomfortable. I couldn’t tell what was going on, but I knew he needed more persuasion.

The smile on my face dwindled into a straight face. “Why’s that?” I asked.

He stared at me quietly. I could tell he had nothing to say, and he was looking for an excuse. But I allowed it.

“You see,” he started. “My house is a haven for me and my son. I can’t just bring anyone home just like that.” He explained.

“So now, I’m anyone. I helped save your son and you call me ‘just anyone’?” I asked with a teasing voice.

“You know that’s not anywhere close to what I meant.” He tried to defend what he said.

“What did you mean, then? That you refer to me as just anyone and you say you didn’t mean it like that.” My tease was working perfectly.

“Okay, it’s fine. You can visit from time to time. Just make sure you call me before you show up. I’m not a big fan of surprises.” He said.

I couldn’t tell if it was what he said, but I instantly remembered the kissing incident and my cheeks puffed. I was blushing so hard that I couldn’t hide it from him.

I could tell he knew what I was blushing about. I saw him try to hide his smile, too.

“That nurse spoilt one moment that would have been a remarkable one,” I said while I was still blushing.

“How’d you know what was on my mind? I’m not thinking much about it though.”

I still couldn’t get rid of the blush on my face, regardless of how hard I tried. Then, history began to repeat itself. We locked eyes again.

My heart raced as our faces inched closer, the air thick with anticipation. My breath brushed against his lips, warm and delicate. I could feel the electricity between us, a magnetic pull that drew us together. Time seemed to slow as my eyes flickered down to his mouth, then back up to meet his gaze.

The world around us blurred, fading into the background as if it were just the two of us, suspended in that moment.

My pulse quickened as his hand gently cupped my cheek; his touch sent shivers down my spine. The softness of his lips was just a fraction of an inch away, and I could practically taste the sweet tension between us. My eyelids fluttered closed as I leaned in, my breath hitching as our lips brushed, teasingly close, but not quite touching.

Every nerve in my body was on edge, the longing was almost too much to bear.

But just as our lips were about to meet, a sudden truck horn shattered the spell, pulling us back to reality. We both pulled away, our chests rising and falling as we exchanged a breathless, knowing smile.

In that moment, I realized the almost kiss was even more exhilarating than the kiss itself – a promise of what could be, a memory etched into my mind forever.

It became weird quickly. Two almost-kiss incidents in one day. My body itched suddenly. I looked around for distractions, but nothing could take my mind off the would be kiss staring me in the face.

Ben was surprisingly calm. He looked at me straight in the eyes like he was full of thoughts. I could read his mind.

“Maybe we should start heading back to the hospital.” He suggested.

“Oh, yes. Great idea. Let’s go.” It wasn’t a great idea. I wanted to spend more time with him, watching the sunset. I’d like to do as he asked. I didn’t want to seem desperate.

We made our way to the hospital, which was close by. My phone buzzed.

It was a text from my Aunt Nelly. She was worried that I’d left the house this morning, and it was already getting dark without me returning.

“Olivia, where are you? Call me when you get this. I’m worried.” Her text read.

I started typing to send to her, but I deleted everything halfway and called her.

“Olivia? Are you alive? Are you okay? Did you get hurt?” She threw questions at me as soon as she took the call.

“I’m fine, Aunt Nelly. Don’t worry about me.” I said to calm her down.
