“Ben,” She retorted.

“There’s something I need to tell you.” I started.

“What’s that?” She was smiling like she had just won the lottery. She didn’t care about the awkwardness of the silence.

“You see, this is very important.” I stalled. I wanted to search for the right words to say.

“I’m all ears. Tell me whatever it is, I’m listening.” She said. She seemed different. She didn’t complain about my worried look and asked why I was delaying what I had to say.

I summoned the courage to say It. There was no better time. “Olivia, I must admit that I L…” my phone started ringing just as I was about to add love to the sentence. “Hold on, let me check who this is,” I said.

I took the phone out of my pocket to check who the caller was.

Audrey!

My son’s mother—my ex, the one who broke my heart—was calling me for the first time in years.

CHAPTER 18

Olivia

His countenance after he saw the caller didn’t speak well for whoever it was. He looked like he had received a call from a ghost or a debtor.

“Olivia, I must go now. We’ll pick this conversation up later.” He said and left quickly, not looking back.

I bit my lip gently as I watched him walk away. All I could think of at that moment was how he made me feel during the sex. It was one of the best feelings I’ve ever had.

My tummy churned in excitement as I tried hard to remember the thrill of the last few moments. My thighs were still burning from the euphoria. I wanted more of this, but it wasn’t in my hands to push this forward, at least Ben had made that clear.

The sex was good, yes, but having to leave like that every time didn’t leave me happy in any way. If there would be a time our moments after lasted for a while, if we could talk and just relax for a long while…

My phone vibrated in my pocket. The sound called me out of my fantasy. I muttered and grunted as I struggled to pull the phone out. “Oh! Aunt Nelly.”

“Hello, Olivia!” Aunt Nelly said.

“Hey, Aunt Nelly!” I responded. My voice sounded like a happy teenager.

“Are you busy?” she asked. Her tone wasn’t like the happy Aunt Nelly I know. I was suspicious still.

“I’m still at the ranch, why?” I asked with a free mind.

“You must be tired, then.” She said.

“You know it.” I chuckled.

“Have some rest and come to the house as soon as you can.” She said.

“Is something wrong?” I was curious.

“Nothing that you worry about. Just come when you’re well rested.” She said.

“Okay, Aunt Nelly,” I responded and the call ended. I rolled my eyes and sighed.

As I approached the ranch house, a sense of nostalgia washed over me. The sun was setting, casting a warm, golden hue over the sprawling fields. The wooden porch creaked beneath my boots as I ascended the steps, each sound a familiar greeting.

The aroma of freshly cut hay and the faint scent of horses lingered in the air. As I pushed open the weathered door, memories flooded back. The rustic interior, adorned with cowboy hats felt like a comforting embrace. The old, stone fireplace stood proudly in the center of the living room, its crackling fire inviting me closer.

I made my way through the cozy rooms, past the worn leather couches and the kitchen filled with the enticing aroma of a home-cooked meal. The ranch house, a haven of cherished moments and generations of stories, even if not mine, welcomed me home with open arms.
