The morning of thecompetition came sooner than I expected. My stomach churned with nerves, but I knew I was as ready as I could possibly be.
I got dressed, then headed out to pick up some fresh ingredients from the local farmers’ market before heading over to the competition grounds.
When I arrived at the park, there were already dozens of people milling about and setting up their tents and stalls. The event was being held on the far side of the park, where a stage had been set up for the judges, and a large tent had been erected for all the contestants to prepare their dishes.
As soon as I entered the park, I spotted Annabelle, who seemed to have taken the afternoon off from dog walking—though that didn’t mean she didn’t come with her own pup in tow, a rascally chihuahua named Pico.
“Annabelle!” I called out as I approached her.
She turned and waved, then gave me a quick hug when I reached her. “Hey, girl! Are you ready to kick some ass?”
I took a deep breath and nodded. “As ready as I’ll ever be.”
“That’s what I like to hear,” she said, giving me an encouraging pat on the back. “You’re gonna do great.” She then paused, lowering her voice. “Hey, so did you and that fireman hit it off? I never got the chance to ask.”
I blushed almost immediately as I turned my gaze to anywhere but Annabelle’s inquisitive eyes. I had ignored her call the night before, knowing she wanted all the dirty details, but she wasn’t going to let me avoid the question that easily.
I wasn’t even sure what to say. It’d be a bit of an understatement to call what happened between Lucian and me “hitting it off.”
I cleared my throat and said, “Uh, yeah. We’re planning on going out after the competition.”
“Ooh,” Annabelle cooed. “Sounds like things are getting serious.”
I rolled my eyes and replied, “Yeah, right. It’s just one date.”
She nudged my shoulder with her elbow, saying, “Hey, you never know. When the connection is real? It can happen faster than you think.”
“You’ve been watching way too many K-dramas, Belle.”
