We stayed like that for a while, just kissing, until finally Lucian pulled away, his eyes dark with desire.

“I want you so badly,” he murmured. “But I don’t want to take advantage of you when you’re still recovering.”

I smiled and shook my head. “I want you too. More than anything.”

He searched my eyes, as if looking for any sign of hesitation, before finally nodding. “If you’re sure.”

I leaned in and kissed him again, letting him know I was more than sure.

Then I pulled away and asked, “Would marking me… make me your mate?”

“Yes.”

“And then would we… be compatible?”

He nodded, understanding what I was hinting at. “For humans, it can take a month or two for your biology to adjust. But yes.”

I thought about it and the implications.

Lucian added, “It isn’t something we monsters take lightly. We mate for life, and it would be permanent. Maybe not for you, but for me…”

“So it’s really serious. Like a…” I blushed, realizing how forward the question was now. “Like a marriage.”

His expression grew serious, and I wasn’t sure what he was thinking. “More or less, yes.”

It was definitely too soon for that, as much as every part of me wanted to be his. But even just asking about it, and hearing him say that was what it meant for monsters, made my heart race.

“I’m sorry,” I said, suddenly self-conscious. “I didn’t mean to make things awkward. I had just been wondering how it all works.”

Lucian shook his head and leaned in, kissing me again, softly and tenderly as he insisted, “Don’t apologize ever. You can speak openly with me about anything.”

I smiled, feeling the tension in my shoulders ease. “I’m glad we cleared that up,” I said with a soft laugh.

Lucian smiled back and nodded. “Me too.”

The mood had shifted, but that wasn’t necessarily a bad thing. It was just the two of us, alone in the quiet of his apartment, with a comfortable understanding of what this relationship meant to each other.

I knew then, without a doubt, that I wanted to be with Lucian. I just wasn’t sure if he felt the same. ‘For life’ wasn’t something to take lightly; he was right about that.

He leaned in to kiss me again, and I wrapped my arms around his neck, pulling him close as our tongues met. The kiss was gentle at first, but it soon became heated.

Lucian’s hands roamed over my body, exploring every curve as he deepened the kiss. I moaned softly into his mouth as his fingers traced the outline of my breasts through my clothes.

He pulled away, his eyes dark with desire as he looked down at me. “You’re perfect,” he said, his voice barely above a whisper. “Absolutely perfect.”

My heart was pounding, and my breath was quickening as he drew nearer, his lips just a hair’s breadth away from mine.

It felt like a dream—an intense, electrifying dream that made my toes curl and my pulse race. And it only got more intense as his hands slid down to caress my breasts through my shirt.

His touch sent shivers of pleasure through me, and my nipples stiffened in response as he continued to explore my body. His lips trailed kisses down my neck and across my collarbone. My head fell back, and a soft moan escaped my lips.

My eyelids were heavy, my limbs weak. His touch had such an otherworldly effect on me.

His fingers glided across my skin, leaving a trail of fire in their wake. He made quick work of my shirt, lifting it over my head and tossing it to the side, then moving on to my bra. His hands cupped my breasts as he kissed his way down to my nipples.

I gasped as he worshipped my breasts, licking and sucking my sensitive nipples until I was a quivering mess. My fingers tangled in his hair as he brought me closer and closer to the edge.

His fingers trailed down my stomach, then unfastened my pants and pulled them off, leaving me in just my panties. His gaze lingered on my body, taking in every inch of my exposed skin.
