But I had gotten a glimpse of success—right until the fire threw my life out of whack yet again.

Still, I felt like I could recover from the worst of it, now that I was no longer struggling alone.

I gazed up at Lucian and traced my fingers over the curve of his jaw. His wolfish canines poked out of his mouth, and the thought of being bitten by him one day sent a thrill through me.

He let out a soft hum, his eyes fluttering open as his gaze landed on me. “Good morning,” he murmured, his voice husky from sleep.

“Morning,” I whispered.

He watched me a moment longer, then craned his neck to glance at the bedside clock.

“Do you have to be anywhere?” I asked quietly, nuzzling into him.

“It pains me to say it, but I should get back to my duties. I can only be away from the station for so long before it devolves into chaos, even with Baptiste trying to keep things in order.” He then poked my nose. “And don’t you have a food truck business that’s starting to take off?”

“Ugh, yeah. You’re right.”

“Usually I work in 24-hour shifts, but I’ll see if I can get some of the guys to fill in for me so our schedules can line up until we find a solution to keep you safe.”

“Do you have any ideas?”

“Well, my house is safe, at least. Baptiste is a warlock, and he put a protection spell on it long ago. He does that for everyone he’s close to.”

“Will I be safe going back to work?”

“I think so. Demons prefer operating in the shadows, so you should be okay as long as you’re out in public. And we’ll keep in touch now that you have a phone again. If you need anything or feel unsafe, just call me.”

I nodded, leaning up to press a soft kiss to his lips. He smiled down at me, his eyes filled with love and affection as he said, “Now go get ready for your day, and I’ll see you soon.”

I reluctantly pulled away from him and headed to the bathroom, freshening up and putting on some clothes before headingdownstairs. It was nerve-wracking to leave the safety of Lucian’s house, but I knew I had to go back out into the world eventually. I couldn’t let fear turn me into a hermit.

As I stepped out into the morning sun, I took a deep breath and steeled myself for whatever challenges lay ahead.

I could do this.

I hummed to myselfas I prepared the food truck. It had now been a week since the fire at my apartment, and I had settled into a routine with Lucian, staying at his place at night while working in my food truck during the day.

Things had been relatively uneventful, and I was grateful for the peace and quiet after everything that had happened.

Lucian’s warlock friend Baptiste had yet to hear or see any sign of the demon since the fire. Lucian still seemed antsy about the imp, but he couldn’t do much until he caught its scent again, so we carried on as usual, but remained wary.

As I finished up the last of my prep work, I heard a familiar voice call out to me.

I looked up to see Annabelle approaching the food truck with a smile on her face. “Hey,” she greeted me, leaning against the counter and eyeing the menu. “How’ve you been?”

“I’ve been good,” I replied. “Busy with the food truck and all.”

She nodded in understanding. “I’ve noticed. It’s great that you’ve been so successful, but I feel like I never get to see you anymore.”

I sighed. “Yeah, things have been crazy. When I’m not working in the food truck, I’m usually…” I paused, realizing I was just about to get into the sordid details of my relationship with Lucian. “Uh… helping out with other stuff.”

Annabelle’s brow arched, a knowing smile tugging at her lips. “Helping out, huh? Is that what they call it these days?”

I blushed, shaking my head as she laughed.

“Come on, you already told me you’re staying with Lucian. So what’s it been like? Are you guys, like, official now?”

“Yeah, I guess we are. I mean, it’s still pretty new, but it’s going well.”
