I stared after them until they disappeared around the corner.

Oh God.

What did he mean by the smell being me? Did I stink?

I sniffed at my shirt, but it mostly just smelled like my ingredients.

Wait, wait, wait…

All his complimenting and smoldering glances had gotten me all excited in ways I hadn’t felt in a while.

He hadn’t smelled that I was turned on, had he?

I groaned, slapping a palm against my forehead.

No wonder he booked it the second he had an excuse.

Thankfully, business died down soon after the firefighters left, so I packed up shop and decided to call it a day. I had made triple my usual take, so I told myself to be happy with that and treat myself to a nice cold shower and a glass of wine back at my apartment.

With any luck, the cold water could wash away the humiliation.

More likely, I would be replaying memories of Lucian’s gorgeous face and that sexy smirk for the rest of the night.

Chapter 3

Lucian

I couldn’t get heroff my mind.

Zoe.

Cute, spicy Zoe.

From the moment Baptiste called me over to the food truck, I knew there was something special about her. Her scentwas unmistakable—the smoky sweetness of her gumbo blended perfectly with her own natural essence.

But I didn’t know the half of it until I got close enough to breathe her in.

That was when it became clear.

She was something special.

Her scent was unlike anything I had ever experienced before, and I was drawn to it like a moth to a flame. It was everything I’d been looking for: spicy and savory, warm and comforting.

It stirred the beast in me, made me feel alive again.

And beyond her scent, she was gorgeous. Her rich brown hair, the smattering of freckles across her cheeks and nose, her full lips, her curvy body, the red blush across her face when I complimented her cooking.

She was perfect.

Even her nervousness was adorable.

The problem was, my hellhound side just might have scared her off. I hadn’t meant to sniff her so obviously, but it had been so hard to resist her scent. And then I’d gotten called away before I could figure out how to explain myself.

She must’ve seen me as some unruly, untrained dog, the way I had behaved.

I had to see her again, if only to apologize. I didn’t want her thinking I was some sort of monster.

Sure, I literally was a hellhound, but I had always endeavored to integrate into human society as best as I could. It had never been my intention to take advantage of humans, like some of my brethren, or to behave with such disgrace.
