“Oh yeah?” I say, raising an eyebrow. “And not to be sexist, but what do you two plan on doing if your crazy ex shows up? Hmm? He’s a hockey player. He’s twice your size.”

“Fi is freakishly strong,” she mutters like a smartass.

“Uh-huh.” I lean in closer until we’re breathing each other’s air.

She looks back at me, her eyes hooded, and leans forward, her mouth sealing over mine, and I lean into the kiss, pressing my hard length against her as we grind against each other. Everything fades around us as our tongues twist together and our teeth bite and nibble.

Cold drops of rain bring me out of my lust-induced haze, and we look up at the sky in dismay. The earthy smell of petrichor wafts through the air, filling my nostrils as water pitter-patters onto the concrete pathways. “Where’s Link anyway?” I ask, trying to will my boner down. It’s ridiculously obvious in these thin shorts.

“I don’t know.” She scrunches her face when a fat raindrop falls onto her nose. “I thought he was still asleep with you when we left.”

I smile slightly and wipe away the moisture from her face. “Well, he was gone when I woke up.”

“He probably just went to the gym,” she says, taking my hand. “Let’s go back inside. I’m going to punish you if my Lucky Charms are soggy.”

“Let’s hope they’re mush then. What’re we talking about? Spanking? Choking? Because I’m flexible. Figuratively and literally,” I say, wagging my eyebrows at her.

Charlie laughs out loud, smacking my abs. “You’re an idiot.”

We walk back into the dining hall just as the rain begins to fall in earnest.

CHARLIE

Breakfast blends into brunch and more friends start showing up as the morning turns to noon. Brantley’s eyes light up when he spots us in the dining hall, and Damon’s happy to sit and pick my brain about movie theater stuff.

“I think everything went really smoothly over the long weekend,” Damon gushes, pushing his glasses up his nose with a grin. “I can’t believe John and Lincoln let me run it for three whole days by myself. Pretty sure I got the assistant manager position in the bag.”

I smile at his enthusiasm. “Are you going to stick around for the summer then?” I remember Link wanted someone during the slower season.

“Yeah, I’m taking summer classes since my parents are traveling, and I could really use the extra money for my books next year, so it would be awesome if I got it.”

“Well, I suspect you’re already the top candidate, but I’ll talk to Link if you want,” I say.

His eyes widen. “Really? That would be so great!”

“Sure,” I say with a wink.

“Speaking of…” Damon gives me a sly grin. “You and Lincoln seem to be talking again.”

“You could say that.” I glance down at my phone because he still hasn’t answered my texts this morning. I’m not necessarily worried, but it’s weird for him to just disappear like that. Normally radio silence is my move.

Fiona asks Damon a question, and I take the opportunity to lean toward Trey, putting my mouth close to his ear so no one else overhears me.

“Have you heard from Link yet?”

His hand, which has been possessively clutching my thigh under the table squeezes, and he shakes his head. I can tell he’s worried too; his muscles are tense.

“Looks like the rain is letting up a little. Might be time to make a break for it,” Brantley says, looking out of one of the cathedral-like windows. Everyone agrees, packing up and muttering about doing homework before classes.

“Do you want to come with us back to the guys’ dorm?” I ask Fi as I pick up my dirty dishes.

“No, I think I’m okay now,” she says with a smile. “Thanks for the girl’s night.”

“Anytime.”

“I’ll just walk your way to get my stuff.”

I nod as we step outside, the damp, misty air clinging to my skin as we walk toward the boys’ dorms. I glance over at the Elk Building, which looms over a grove of newly budding maples likea black obelisk. I know Matt’s not in there right now, but a chill ripples through my body, nonetheless. I don’t understand how he can just disappear, and based on all the photos he took of me before, the thought that he might be lurking nearby, watching, is always in the back of my mind.
