Trey’s grip on me tightens, and I know it’s a losing battle. All the fight leaves me.

Blue and red lights flash around us, bouncing off the walls and circling the room like some sort of fucked-up disco ball.

I bury myself against Trey, crawling into his lap as my body shakes with my sobs.

“Shhh, Bennett, it’s okay,” he whispers. “It’s going to be okay.”

For once, Trey’s voice can’t calm me because nothing about this is okay.

If Seb or Link is hurt—or worse—I won’t come back from that. Nothing will ever be okay again.

LINCOLN

Once Charlie is safe with Trey, I turn to Sebastian and Matt struggling on the ground. They grunt and curse as they roll around, knocking into furniture and upending stacks of film canisters.

Sebastian is big, but Matt’s a hockey player, and even though he’s a center, he’s still built like a human wall.

I scan the scene, finally spotting the gun just out of Matt’s reach under one of the projectors.

Just then, Matt rolls over Sebastian, straddling his waist. He fists the front of Seb’s shirt and lays into him with a solid punch to the mouth. Blood pours down Seb’s chin.

“Still can’t beat me in a fight, huh, Sebastian?”

Sebastian sneers at him and spits blood. “Fuck off, Matt,” he growls.

I step forward, grabbing both of Matt’s arms, and he cries out when I cinch them together behind his back until they’re close to popping from their sockets.

“The gun,” I pant, pointing with my chin as my muscles strain to hold Matt still while he thrashes against my grip.

Sebastian wiggles from underneath Matt’s body and crawls for the gun, grabbing it and pointing it at the asshole’s face.

“Stop moving, fucker,” Sebastian he bares his teeth, now red with blood.

Matt stops his struggle, staring up at Sebastian with murderous intent. I allow my arms, which are shaking and burning from holding him in place, to relax as I let go and lean back.

I look up at Sebastian, unsure what to do next.

“As much as I’d like you to shoot this asshole, I assume we should wait for the cops.”

Sebastian’s hand is shaking on the trigger, and I eye him warily, curious if he’ll do it. But Matt makes the decision for us. He kicks his leg with surprising agility, his foot catching Sebastian’s ankle. He goes down, and the sound of the gun as it fires is deafening.

My ears ring, and pain reverberates through my body.

A ragged cry rips my throat raw as I look down in shock at the blood blooming across the gray material of my dress shirt.

I barely register Sebastian hitting Matt across the back of his head before the world starts to tilt, my vision swimming in and out of focus.

My back meets the ground hard, knocking the breath from my lungs.

Sebastian drops to my side, panting. “Shit. Stay with me, buddy. She’ll kill me if you die. Stay with me, Lincoln.”

I can barely hear him over the ringing noise.

I don’t doubt he’s right, and the thought of causing Charlie more pain makes my gut twist. Then Sebastian applies pressure to my shoulder and the darkness takes me away.
