A-fucking-dorable.

“If I tell you, you can’t judge me.”

“Sure.” I give her a wide grin while my fingers cross an X over my heart like we’re making some sort of middle school pact. “Promise.”

Her eyes narrow as if she’s assessing whether to trust me, but she finally takes a breath, looking away. “My collection is a mix of reverse harem and male-male.” She frowns, looking almost offended. “People always think since I’m into English that I should like the classics, but I’m a sucker for smut—Manga, romance books, you name it. Male-male stuff is especially hot.”

I raise my eyebrows, fighting back a shocked chuckle. “You’re just full of surprises, Bennett. You come across as this innocent, introverted little thing, but your taste in books and the way you fuck says otherwise.”

She seems flustered by the compliment, her gaze dropping to the floor.

I reach out to cup her chin and run my thumb along her bottom lip. “Speaking of fucking…”

Charlie squeals as I grab her hand and pull her to my bed, pinning her soft body beneath mine.

CHAPTER SIXTEEN

CHARLIE

Ismooth my hands down my black satin dress and glance around the party.

Where is he?

I haven’t seen Matt in over an hour. I spot Sebastian mingling with Mr. and Mrs. Farthing, some of my stepdad’s investors, no doubt. Seb has a polite smile on his face, but his eyes meet mine with a silent plea.

I grin, walk over, and place my hand on his shoulder. “Excuse me, but I need a word with my brother,” I say, smiling at the couple. Mrs. Farthing looks distraught and Mr. Farthing, who looks as though he wants to crawl under a table, nods in relief.

“Of course,” he says, pulling his wife away.

“Thank you,” Seb says. “They weren’t even talking about Dad’s business. Apparently, Mrs. Farthing’s son just came out, and after a few glasses of wine, she’ll share anything, including her homophobic opinions.”

“Yikes,” I say, frowning.

“Yikes, indeed,” Seb agrees. “The whole conversation was making me uncomfortable.” He brushes his dark brown hair from his forehead. “How’re you doing?”

“I was looking for Matt,” I say, glancing around again. “I want him to pretend to be a doting boyfriend. You know how creepy some of Dad’s business people can be. Ever since I hit puberty, they hang around and stare at me.” I make a gag face.

Sebastian grimaces. “I haven’t seen him, but I think it’s almost toast time.” He nods toward the mic being set up at the front of the room.

“Oh crap!” I say. “I have cue cards. I think they’re in my room.”

“Of course you made cue cards,” Seb says. “Always prepared, little sis.”

“Damn straight.”

I do my most ladylike fast walk out of the dining room and rush up the stairs, trying not to twist an ankle in my heels. I open the door to my room, pausing when I see movement on the bed.

My brain misfires when I squint into the darkness.

Is that…

My eyes adjust. Someone is fucking on my bed.

Not just someone.

Matt.

His head snaps up, and our eyes meet. I’m frozen in place, bile rising in my throat.
