It’s why I ran after that night two years ago. Being in her orbit is an emotional minefield.

When I get to the Wolf Building, I realize I don’t really want to go up and sulk in my dorm, and I have an hour before my next class, so I sit down on a bench and stew about the interaction I saw between Matt and Charlie instead. Which is super healthy, I get it, but I know enough about Matt fucking Johnson to know Charlie deserves better.

I clench my fist and grimace when I feel my nails bite into the skin of my palm.

My eyes wander. I can still see Charlie across the quad, scribbling in her notebook with her brows pinched together in concentration.

Why am I obsessing about this? It’s infuriating. I hate her.Maybe if I just fucked her like the others…

My body seems to agree as I feel my cock stir against my jeans.

“What’s got your panties in a twist?” Trey snarks from behind me, pulling my dark thoughts out of the gutter. “Or should I ask who?”

No point in lying to the guy. “Matt and Charlie were chatting earlier.”

Trey gives me a pleading look. “Look, I don’t like him either, but you can’t exactly tell her who not to talk to.”

“Well, technically I can,” I grumble. “It just makes me look like an obsessed crazy person.”

“You are obsessed.” Trey sits down beside me and tosses his backpack onto the ground. “It’s part of your charm.” He gives me an appraising look. “ I saw you giving poor Damon an earful for flirting with Charlie the other day—don’t deny it.”

I give him a dark look. “I tried to sweet-talk Chancellor Edwards into kicking Matt out of here.”

“Really?” Trey says with a knowing smile. “And why would you do that? Are you trying to protect her? So sweet.”

“Absolutely not.” I grimace. “I just don’t like the guy on my turf. He gives me the creeps.”

Trey frowns. “You and me both. So what did the chancellor say?”

“She basically told me to pound sand.”

Trey’s hand goes to his chest in mock shock. “What? An Evans who didn’t get his way?”

“Fuck off,” I growl, my mood darkening by the minute. “Johnson is one of our hockey centers, and you know how this damn school feels about its hockey team.”

Trey whistles. “He probably knew he was invincible, otherwise he wouldn’t have intentionally pissed you off.”

“Or the dude is a damn sociopath,” I say. “Basically, we have to catch him doing something pretty fucked-up to get him expelled.”

Trey rubs his stubble thoughtfully. “I wonder if Brantley has any dirt on the guy—maybe he takes ’roids or something.”

“Worth asking,” I agree. “But Brantley is going to be disappointed. My guess is that Johnson is the key to some serious wins, and Brantley needs those under his belt this season to help with his NHL recruitment.”

Trey nods. “So I take it we’re also going to keep our own tabs on the fucker, then?”

“Bingo,” I say, glad that my friend is on the same page. “I just hate that Charlie’s so damn nice to that asshole.”

“She’s a nice girl, Link. She’s nice to everyone.”

“She’s sassy as hell to me.”

Trey stares at me, deadpan. “Evans, you’ve been nothing but rude to her since that first night on the quad.”

“Beside the point,” I huff.

“Someone’s a Bitter Bert.”

“That’s not even a thing.” I look back over at her still sitting under the oak trees looking perfectly fucking innocent like she doesn’t have my balls in a vice. “She’s been avoiding us since Halloween.”
