Page 50 of Someday Away

I’m not a fan of Lola’s scratchy couch. After spending a few hours club-hopping with Fiona and her friend, I was happy to make it back to the tiny apartment in one piece. I’m a bit drunk. Fi, the lucky bitch, is sharing Lola’s bed, though from the heavy snoring I hear through the door, maybe she isn’t so lucky.

I sigh, rubbing my eyes as I try to force myself to relax. I miss my bed.

My phone buzzes, vibrating loudly on the hardwood floor. I reach down, snatching it up, hoping the noise didn’t wake anyone. I’m about to silence my texts altogether when I see Lincoln’s name light up the screen.

Lincoln

Hey Sunshine, you up?

I stare at the message for a beat, knowing I shouldn’t respond. I’m definitely too drunk and should wait until morning.

“Fuck it,” I mutter.

Asshole. Did you seriously text me like some sort of horny teenager?

Lincoln

Yes. And?

And, it’s weird. If you’re looking for a booty call, try Serenity.

Lincoln

Nah, tried that. Not really my type.

And I am?

My heart is pounding, I watch the three dots appear and disappear several times before he replies.

Lincoln

I never said that. Where are you?

In bed.

Lincoln

Liar. I’m at your dorm. You’re not here.

“The fuck…?” I breathe.

What? Why are you at my dorm?

Lincoln

Why aren’t you here?

Answer my question first.

Lincoln

I came over to talk.

I’m in Seattle with Fiona.

Lincoln

Do you always run from your problems?
