Page 97 of Someday Away

I jump, breaking my kiss with Trey. I look back at Lincoln as he walks toward us, a smile tugging at his lips. He looks delicious in his dark jeans and a gray Henley, the material of the sleeves tight around his biceps.

“Cockblocker,” Trey mutters as I climb off of him and stand, turning toward Link. He stops, cocking an eyebrow at me. It’s only been about a day since I saw them at school, but I’m seriously craving them both.

I close the distance between me and Link, my arms circling his slim waist as I bury my face in his chest, inhaling his intoxicating sandalwood scent. He hesitates as if surprised by the hug, but then his strong arms wrap around my body, crushing us so close together I can hear his rapid heartbeat. It’s not a friendly embrace—it’s intimate, and it breeds tension that has my body shaking with the need to escalate it into something more sensual, but I hold back. My cheeks heat as I feel his dick thickening against my stomach, and he finally pulls away with a resigned sigh.

Link sits down heavily on the couch, pulling me down between him and Trey. Then they both slide away from me so we aren’t touching as if some distance between us can defuse the sexual tension in the air.

“Should we watch a movie?” Link asks, picking up the remote. Trey and I both nod. “Any preferences?”

“Oh no,” I say, pursing my lips, “I’m not doing this again. Last time, it took us ages to decide what to watch. Why don’t you choose since you’re the cinephile.”

Lincoln shrugs and starts shuffling through an outrageously large selection of films, finally deciding onScott Pilgrim vs. theWorld. I settle between the boys, leaning my head on Trey's shoulder and tucking my feet under Link’s warm thigh.

We’re only up to Ramona’s second evil ex, who I had completely forgotten was played by Chris Evans, when Trey’s phone starts to buzz. He glances at it, rolling his eyes.

“It’s my parents. They like to call around the holidays—it’s the one time of year they pretend to actually give a shit.”

I sit up from my cozy spot against Trey, and Lincoln pauses the movie, then throws an arm around my shoulders so I have a new warm body to lean against. Not that I’m complaining. I take a long pull of my Diet Pepsi.

“Hey, Ma,” Trey answers, putting her on speaker phone.

“Atreyu, darling, Merry Christmas.” I choke on my drink, almost spitting it into Link’s lap, and cover my mouth quickly. Link snickers and pats my back. Trey’s eyes narrow at me.

“Atreyu?”I mouth.

“What was that? Do you have friends over?”

“It’s just Lincoln, Ma. We’re watching a movie.”

“Oh, that’s nice.” She sounds like the world’s snobbiest snob, and I wrinkle my nose at the emotionless way she talks to her son. “Your father is here.”

“Hello, son,” he says, sounding distracted. “I hope school is going well.”

“Sure, Dad, straight As.”

I raise my eyebrows because I know that’s a bald-faced lie. Trey just shrugs. He clearly wants the call over with, which makes me sad.

“Good, good,” his dad murmurs.

“I was just cast as Lady Macbeth,” his mom says, sounding smug. “We’ll be doing a run in the Globe Theater in London.”

“That’s great, Ma,” Trey says, his voice strained with fake excitement.

“I just wanted you to know because I didn’t want you to expect us home during the summer this year.”

“Oh, okay.”

“Anyway, have a lovely holiday, dear.”

“Thanks, you too.” The smile on Trey’s face is tight, even though she can’t see him. Then the line goes dead.

We sit in awkward silence for a beat before Trey glances at me. “Well, that was depressing.”

“Always is,” Link mumbles, his brow lowering in frustration as he watches his friend.

“Wait, wait…” I say. “Is no one going to address the fact that your full name isAtreyu? As in the character fromThe NeverEnding Story?” My eyes bounce between them. “How did I not know this?”

Lincoln chuckles, and Trey rolls his eyes. “Yeah, yeah. It’s not like I made it public knowledge after high school. My parents were Gen X nerds just like yours. Most people had forgotten until my senior year of high school whenStranger Thingsmade it popular again.”
