“Have a nice evening,” I told him as he walked off with a wave.

The doors closed slowly with a smack and carried me up to P.

I chuckled, realizing I didn’t even know his place was on the top floor.

He certainly didn’t mention it, but what would he say? It kind of goes with the whole flashy living thing, I guessed.

As the doors opened, I saw an apartment door at the end of the hall to the right and one to the left. I looked down at my phone and determined that Hunter’s penthouse was to the right. I rolled my suitcases down the spacious hallway and stopped in front of his door.

I stared at my phone again and typed in the code for the door. It clicked, and I pushed it open to see an expansive hallway leading into the living area. Floor-to-ceiling windows encased the entire two-story room, which showcased a beautiful view of the lake. Hardwood floors stretched as far as the eye could see.

This was spectacular. He’d said it was modern and cold, but the natural light warmed things right up for me.

As I slowly rolled my suitcases into the room, I turned to see a large kitchen with grey cabinets, white counters, and stainless-steel appliances. Above that was a loft overlooking the living area with a dark metal, sleek railing.

I looked around to see a staircase with a matching railing leading up the stairs. I rolled my bags over and took the first one off to haul up the stairs.

But first, I turned around to appreciate the expansive view of the lake.

“This is so beautiful,” I whispered, noticing a few photographs on the wall before a yowl scared me to death.

I turned around and looked up the stairs to see Purrlock staring down at me as if I were a burglar.

“It’s okay, Purrlock. Your daddy is letting me stay here.”

She sat and curled her tail around her as if to challenge me to a duel. I had visions of getting up the stairs and her wrapping her legs around my ankle, refusing to let go.

“I’m coming up, Purrlock. You just lead the way,” I said calmly, taking each step carefully until I made it to the regal white cat.

Meow. She tilted her head, and I realized she had one hazel eye and one blue eye.

“Ah, you’re so pretty, aren’t you?”

Purrlock stood and arched her back as she brushed up against my suitcase. “Okay, lead the way to the guestroom.”

Surprisingly, Purrlock led the way, but not before I stopped to take in the view. A bonus room at the top of the stairs had a sectional and a glass coffee table. I might sneak there tonight to start the book.

Purrlock meowed at the opening to a bedroom, and I smiled.

“Good girl, Purrlock.” I rolled my suitcase right into the guest room and froze.

A constant stream of water pattering onto tile echoed from a door slightly propped along the far wall, and then Hunter’s voice echoed into the room as he sangAll I Want for Christmas is You.

The water turned off, but he kept singing as I glared at the cat and pointed. “You did this,” I hissed.

Purrlock hopped onto the bed and stretched her sleek body as Hunter’s singing turned to a whistle, and I started to spin around.

But not before Hunter walked into his bedroom.

I shrieked, and Hunter jumped, gripping a white towel around his waist.

“You’re here,” I squealed, hopping in place and closing my eyes.

“Yeah, I got home early. Surprise.” Hunter laughed. “You know, you can open your eyes. I’m completely covered.”

“No, you’re not. You have abs of steel and a chest someone could play ping-pong on.” I shielded my eyes and searched for my suitcase to roll out of the room. “I shouldn’t be looking at my half-naked boss before my shift tomorrow.”

But. Oh. My. Word. He looked sensational.
