“Well, thank you. That’s really nice of you, and I promise you won’t have to buy me dinner when I’m here.”

“It’s my pleasure.” He glanced around the room. “Is there anything else you need? Towels are in the linen closet across from the bathroom at the end of the hall.”

“I’m set. Thanks.” I glanced at the white cat. “I just have one more bag to grab from downstairs.”

“Oh, I can get that for you.”

“Thanks.” I sat on the bed next to Purrlock. “I met your neighbor.”

“Evelyn? She’s down the hall and such a sweetheart.”

“No. Dave.” I shrugged. “He was quite friendly, but I didn’t trust him. He gave me the creeps.”

Hunter laughed and shook his head. “Then you have good taste. Brielle slept with him.”

My jaw dropped. “No way.”

“Yup.”

I shivered at the thought. “I’m so sorry. You weren’t kidding when you said she wasn’t faithful.”

Hunter’s eyes stayed on mine as if he were trying to figure me out, but I was pretty transparent. Or I thought I was.

“Everyone at the bar is ecstatic you’re helping out for a couple of weeks.”

“I’m excited to see everyone again.”

He tapped the doorframe. “Okay. I’ll be right back with your bag.”

“Thanks. My book is in that one, and I have strict orders to read eight chapters.”

He chuckled as his phone rang. He pulled it out of his pocket and started down the hall. It sounded like his mom was on the other end of the phone, and his voice quieted.

My stomach knotted at the simplicity of it all. Something I took for granted.

A call from my mom.

I ran my hands over Purrlock’s silky fur and willed myself not to cry.

Chapter Eight

Hunter

Things certainly stay lively with Daisy around the apartment. I heard her hummingSilent Nightin the loft bonus area, and it brought a smile to my lips.

I’d always felt like this apartment was cold, but I noticed since Daisy had arrived how much warmer things felt.

Surprisingly, Purrlock hadn’t left her side, which was a relief because all she ever did to anyone else was hiss at them. I just hadn’t wanted to tell Daisy that before she arrived.

As I flipped the chicken wings, I thought about my mom’s call. She and Dad rarely came to town, but I was glad they were making the trek down. I still wasn’t sure why, though. It sounded like they hadTheNutcrackertickets or wanted to get some, and then my Dad suggested a hotel and made a weekend of it.

I wasn’t really sure, but it sounded like they’d be arriving on Friday night.

When the humming stopped, I turned around and looked out the window, where I could see Daisy’s reflection upstairs. She’d curled up with a book in one of my favorite places in the apartment.

I grabbed some silverware and set the table, trying not to overthink things. But from the moment Daisy walked in on me, I couldn’t help but wonder what else might happen while she stayed here.

I put the plates out just as my phone rang. Pulling it out of my pocket, I cringed when I saw the name pop up.
