“I don’t know, but that smorgasbord of snacks the other day was pretty tasty.” I eyed her and couldn’t help but love what I saw. Daisy put joy into the world. No doubt about it.

She held the tiny wing in both hands and smiled. “You are a lot less fancy than I would have guessed. I mean, apart from the penthouse apartment, glitzy SUV, and…” She stopped herself and shrugged. “You’re just full of surprises.”

“I could say the same.”

“Nah. I’m as boring as they come. Give me a good book, and I’m the happiest you’ll ever see me.”

“Do you stick to the Sunshine Breakfast Club’s choices?” I took a bite of chicken.

Daisy shook her head. “No. I veer off course a lot. Before the one Millie insisted on me reading, I had started a thriller.”

I nodded. “I love a good thriller.”

Her eyes grew huge. “You read?”

“It surprises you that I’m literate?”

She chuckled. “You just didn’t strike me as a guy who cracks a spine very often.”

“I guess we have a lot to learn about each other,” I said softly, noticing some hot sauce on her chin.

I reached over with a napkin and dabbed it off for her. “You had a little something-something.”

“Aw, thanks. There’s those manners again.”

“You just bring it out in me.”

Purrlock let out a huge meow, and I rolled my eyes. “Parenthood calls.”

I stood and walked over to my cat’s food dish and filled it up while my cell phone rang on the table.

Daisy glanced at the flashing screen, and her expression fell. Instantly, I knew who blinked on my cell.

She reached for her bottle of beer and took a swig as I set down Purrlock’s food and tried not to panic.

I made my way over to the table and grabbed my phone. “You saw?”

Daisy nodded slowly and lifted her shoulders. “But it’s none of my business.”

I waited for Daisy to bring her gaze to mine, but she didn’t.

“It kind of is your business, and I don’t know why she’s calling. I haven’t heard from her in over a year.”

Daisy nodded and grabbed another wing. “Like I said, it’s none of my business.”

My phone buzzed.

“Ope. Sounds like she left a message.” Daisy flashed a wry smile. “You can go ahead and call her back. I can hide out in my room.”

“Daisy, I don’t want to talk to her. There’s nothing left to say.”

“But you could if you wanted to. That’s all I’m saying.”

“I know, and I don’t want to.”

Daisy nodded her head and smiled. “Okay. I totally believe you.”

“My mom and dad are coming down to Madison this weekend.” I tried to change the subject to something neutral.
