“She’s so talented. I’m glad she decided to break away from the antique store.” She looked at Emily. “Is that something you ever think about doing?”

Emily scowled. “Quit Baubles and Curiosities?”

Mimi waited for a reply.

“No, I love it there.” She smiled at me. “In fact, I need to get going, or I’ll be late.”

“Oh, and I’m bringing pizza back tonight for everyone,” I told Mimi and her grandpa.

“That sounds wonderful, dear. Thank you for thinking of us.” Mimi smiled happily at me, and I could tell Emily wanted to shove me out the door.

Mission Accomplished.

I walked into the kitchen and polished off my croissant as Emily went to her bedroom. I took a couple of sips from the latte and heard her grandparents talking in the other room.

Making my way down the hall, it was hard not to have all the emotions from last week consume me. Thinking back to Emily’s hair tangled between my fingers, her mouth pressed against mine, the sweet taste of her lips.

It didn’t matter that her grandparents were in the other room. That’s what she did to me.

I tapped lightly on her bedroom door.

“Come in,” she said softly. “I’m just putting on some mascara.”

I walked into her bedroom and stood, glancing around. It seemed as fresh and sweet as Emily with the bright white duvet cover, wildflower pillows, and a few photos on her dresser. Inoticed one of her and me and couldn’t stop the smile from spreading across my expression.

“You mad at me for buttering up Mimi?” I teased, walking into the bathroom where she was standing.

She laughed and dipped the wand of mascara into the tube. “It makes me question Mimi’s BS radar.”

“Hey, I wasn’t BSing anyone,” I said softly. “I’m genuinely picking up pizza.”

Her gaze connected with mine in the mirror, and she smiled. “Thanks for not telling them about… us.”

I leaned against the doorframe and nodded. “What’s there to tell? We’re just friends, right?”

She focused on her lashes and nodded. “Exactly.”

“But I hope we can be more, maybe when you get back from the residency.”

She let out a groan and shook her head, taking a step forward. “I just don’t think you’re seeing things clearly right now. And we don’t know that I’m headed anywhere, remember?”

Emily rested her hands on my chest and looked into my eyes.

“You only want me because you can’t have me. Or worse yet, because Rick did. What happens when you get me?”

If only she knew the power of her own words.

Chapter Eleven

Emily

It slipped out, but it had to be said. Why else would Lucas Edwards be so infatuated with me? He could get any woman he wanted. That much was clear, and he didn’t seem to want any of them at the moment. But when I made it my mission not to want him, he became interested.

Reverse psychology at its best.

And that worried me.

And it couldn’t be overlooked that none of this came up until he saw Rick and me exchanging numbers.
