First I’d heard of it. Maybe he’d hoped to invite Clara.

Lucas laughed and looked over at me. “Matter of fact, I wanted to ask Emily.” His eyes locked on mine, and confusion settled in. “My parents decided on an impromptu anniversary celebration, complete with vow renewals. Would you care to be my date?”

My heart skipped a beat as Nina waved goodbye and let herself out. I heard the door close behind her and looked around. The gathering room overlooked the water. A grand brick fireplace stretched to the ceiling, and the flames roiled. The classic furniture fit the style of the rest of the house, and I assumed it had been untouched.

“When is it?” I asked.

“Two days from now.”

I frowned. “I don’t have anything to wear.”

“That’s an easy fix,” Lucas said. “So, is that a yes?”

I bit my bottom lip and thought about it, remembering my mission when I came over here.

“Sure.” I nodded. “Yeah. That sounds fun.”

But I could feel my guard going up around my heart, piece by piece, again.

Lucas looped his arms around me and pulled me in. “Thank goodness. I was worried I’d have to show up solo.”

“God forbid,” I whispered.

“You have no idea.” He laughed. “My parents want us to dance with them.”

My eyes flashed to his. “I have two left feet. Like, I’m really awful.”

“Just let me lead,” he said, taking a step back.

But he didn’t let go. He slid his hand into mine, wrapped his other arm around my waist, and started to glide with me in his arms.

“This is the foxtrot,” he said, his voice low. “It should work for whatever they have planned.”

I glanced down, trying to copy his feet, but he shook his head. “Keep your eyes on me and let me guide you. Your feet will have no choice but to follow.”

Laughing nervously, I kept my eyes on his. “If you say so.”

His smile only widened as his feet moved in a rhythm of his making. To my surprise, I was keeping up, not stepping on his feet or getting mine squashed.

“See?” His voice grumbled deep into my belly, and I couldn’t help but get turned on.

“This is a first,” I confessed. “Usually, one of us would wind up limping at the end.”

He laughed, pulling me in close. “We just fit in so many ways, Emily.”

Our steps slowed, and his eyes stayed on mine.

“That’s why I came over,” I said softly. “I need to start listening to my heart.”

“And what does your heart say?” he asked, tipping my chin up toward his.

I tried to push away the conversation between his sister and him and focused on my mission.

“To give us a try.”

He stood as still as stone and didn’t take his eyes off me.

“I’m too late,” I said softly.
