Mimi winked at me and nodded. “Good things are on the horizon for you. I can feel it.”

I drew a deep breath and let it out slowly. “Thanks, Mimi. I think I do too.”

Standing from the chair, I pulled my phone out of my pocket and texted Lucas.

Hey, I have some interesting news to share. You at the orchard?

He immediately responded.

Just got back after dropping off the demon cat… I mean Oscar.

I chuckled and texted back.

Don’t let Brad off the hook. He owes your family a Ficus.

He can make it a wedding gift, and we’ll call it even.

My heart skipped a beat when I reread the text.

“That look can’t be replicated,” Mimi said. “It’s pure.”

I flashed my eyes to hers, and I nodded. “It feels pretty special.”

I wrote back a quick text.

I’ll be there in a few.

I gave Mimi a kiss and made my way outside. The temperature had warmed up slightly, and it felt like summer was nipping at my fingertips.

The thought punched me in the gut.

I wouldn’t be on Marigold Island for the summer. I’d be in the Great Smoky Mountains.

As I pulled on my pink helmet, I took a deep breath, inhaling the sweet smell of the island’s sea breeze and flowers that permeated my row of houses.

Things would be okay.

Pulling out of my driveway, I rode down the street toward the orchard. It was a magical place, and it was weird to think I’d be somewhere else for the next few months. Hopefully, I’d be back in time for their fall festival.

A knot formed in my stomach, and I let out a groan that melded with the crashing waves along the side of the winding road.

When I pulled up to the orchard, the gate was wide open, and I drove up and parked.

Lucas opened the door and smiled. “I’ve been counting the minutes.”

I unfastened my helmet and made my way toward my boyfriend.

I liked how that sounded.

“Oh, yeah?”

Lucas nodded and walked down the steps, opening his arms as I dove in.

“You always make me feel safe,” I whispered, breathing in the intoxicating mix of his cologne and something unique to Lucas. It was just fresh and relaxing.

He brushed his lips across the top of my head, and my body tingled with need, but I knew I needed to tell him my news or I’d talk myself out of it, and I owed this to myself.

And Grandma Cecilia and Mimi.
