“And where’s that?”

There was a pause before he spoke. She held her breath.

“On the brink.”

And with that short answer, he snagged the lug wrench and put it on the nut, forcing her to stand and move away.

Criminy. The tone of his voice, so quiet yet so resolved, like he had already accepted his death. Welcomed it maybe.

Her chin sagged to her chest as she exhaled. Yes. She had to admit it. Sometimes, particularly since the promise and Daddy’s death, she felt like she wason the brink, too.

Finished with the last nut, Dog returned to the back of the car with the tools and stowed them in the trunk. He nabbed the flat tire, heaved it into the compartment, and slammed it shut.

He invaded her space again. “Now, about that ride.”

The ride. As much as she’d love to, there was no way she’d risk it with him.

She shook her head. “Thanks for changing the tire, but I have to get going.”

He ran a finger up her bare arm, and her nipples tightened. His gaze was liquid with desire, and a waft of his male musk triggered a delicious clench between her legs. Her body hadn’t gotten the memo it was supposed to be wary.

“Baby, don’t argue. We’re doing this.”

Adark SUV with tinted glasspulled into the restaurant parking lot behind Dog, and a voice emerged from a lowered, passenger-side window.

“Dog.”

Dog’s expression changed from soft to fierce before he turned around.

Chapter Six

And there he was. That asshole, Nate.

“Yo, Dog,” Nate said with a grin Dog wanted to permanently remove. “Looking forward to our meet-up Saturday. It’s been a long time coming.”

Fuck, yeah, it’d been a long time coming. Nate was everything Dog couldn’t stand in a man, even before he’d found out what Nate had done to Krystal. Slick words and fancy clothes covered a rotten core. Just like Dog’s asshole of a father.

Dog put himself between the blonde and the SUV. “Gonna be a good time all around. Just be sure to be on time. Wouldn’t wanna see you forfeit.”

Nate laughed. “No chance of that.” He gestured at the guy driving, and the one in the back-seat peered around Nate’s shoulder. “Got backup to make sure.”

Dog knew all about hisbackup. These were the guys who did most of Nate’s dirty work, shit he didn’t want to mess with. Dog wondered where the rest of his crew was hiding. Rare day to see him without all his bootlickers.

“You going to introduce me to the pretty lady?” Nate asked.

The woman shifted behind Dog. He shoved a hand back and snagged her wrist, holding her in place. “Not your concern, Nate. Not after Krystal.”

Nate’s face turned hard enough to hammer steel on. “How is my ex? Spreading it around the clubhouse, I hear.”

Dog’s hand clenched, tightening on the woman’s arm. Her gasp barely registered. He wanted to pull Nate from the car and beat his assnow, not Saturday. But he couldn’t. According to circuit rules, if they got into it early, organizers would cancel the fight. Luke and Sophie needed the money.

“Move on, Nate.”

A sick smile, one Dog didn’t like at all, cracked Nate’s face. He hated Nate had seen him with this woman. From what Krystal had said, once Nate got a female in his sights, he wouldn’t let go. Much as Dog wanted a night with her, it might be best to let her take off after all.

“Till Saturday then.” Nate leaned out the window. “Nice to almost meet you, love.”

He gestured to the driver with an index finger pointed at the windshield. The SUV pulled away and turned left onto Main Street.
