“Dog! Whatever is wrong, we can fix it. Just tell me!”

He twisted toward her, and her stomach clenched at his expression. He’d never looked at her with such anger and disgust.

“We can fix your shitty judgments about my brothers and my club? About the women we provide for and protect? I think they’re in there so deep they’re a part of you, like a bone or your blood. We’d need a full body transplant to remove all the fucked-up opinions you hold.”

Charley’s whole body jerked, finishing in what felt like a punch to the gut. She stood immobile and unable to speak.

“You think I can forget how you trashed Adele and Krystal? Your treatment of Adele I might be able to excuse because she was being nasty, but Krystal? She’s been through so much shit and comes out kind and considerate. You, who can’t even come close to what she’s been through, are just one step shy of pure stuck-up bitch.”

Charley’s hand went to her throat. “Dog! How can you say that to me?”

He took a menacing step toward her. “Truth hurt, baby? Good. You laid your truth out at the clubhouse. It’s my turn to lay some on you. I can’t believe I took time to take care of you, make sure you were okay after you dropped at my feet. Shoulda given the EMT your purse and counted my blessings when they took you off my hands. Had some kind of screwed up need to be your savior. Fuck that. At least you made me come hard twice, so it wasn’t all for nothing. You got a kick-ass body, babe. Too bad the inside isn’t as hot as the outside.”

Charley had forgotten how to breathe during Dog’s onslaught. When she remembered, she sucked in a serrated breath that sliced through her chest. Her words were barely above a whisper. “I stayed for you. I lost a client, a first for me, so I could spend time with you.” Tears streamed down her face, dripping from her chin, but she made no move to wipe them. “We were so good together. How can you say such awful things to me?”

His lips turned up in a hateful smile. “What was it you said? I was beautiful and not like your precious clean-cut dicks? Us together waseverything.” He snorted, an ugly sound that said so much, and then he made it worse. “I gave you the best orgasms of your life. That’s not being good together. That’s just a good fuck. Take the memories back to Charlotte to get yourself off when your lame-ass boyfriends fail to do the job. In fact, you should get your pretty little ass back to Charlotte right away. Wouldn’t want you to lose any more business because of a stupid crush on me.”

All Charley could do was stare at his sadistic grin. How could she have been so wrong about him?

In one last attempt to find sanity, tears leaking from her eyes, she whispered, “You really don’t want me?”

His face fell into the lines that made him so handsome, the expression he wore when he was considerate and loving. He brushed his hand over his goatee and closed his eyes. Maybe, just maybe he was changing his mind.

Then his face settled into nasty scowl. “No. I don’t. Pack your bags and get out of Edwards.I don’t want to see you again.”

He headed for the door but turned back for one lastcoup de grace. “I mean it, Charley. Get out of town. Now.”

He slammed the door behind him. His motorcycle roared to life, and the sound disappeared in the distance.

Charley dropped to her knees with a sob.

Chapter Twenty

Goddamnit!

Dog stomped across Charley’s driveway and swung a leg over his bike. When the engine let out a loud growl, he turned the bike around and gunned it, spraying gravel out behind him. Tires squealed when he hit the pavement, but he didn’t slow down. Poke gestured from his surveillance spot as Dog sped past, but Dog ignored him and cranked his throttle.

Everything in him screamed to go back inside, to hold his woman, and take it all back. Beg her to forgive him. Kiss her, stroke her, worship her until she wrapped those beautiful legs around his waist, and he was balls deep in her. She was his, and he’d just cut her loose.

Fuck Nate for forcing him into this. He was going to kill the bastard for making him hurt Charley that way. The look on her face, wet from tears, vulnerable, almost made him cave at the end and tell her it wasn’t true. But he didn’t. He reminded himself that any hurt she’d felt in that moment was nothing compared to the agony Nate could inflict.

Cutter had been right, and Dog hated him for it.

Taking an entrance to the highway, he twisted the accelerator and merged into traffic at eighty miles per hour. He dodged cars and trucks, going between them when he had too, but it did no good. He couldn’t outrace his feelings.

Jesus Christ, Charley had changed him. Made him want things he couldn’t have. Made him want a woman in his life, to hold close, to let in. Someone who didn’t need him but wanted him anyway. He couldn’t imagine she would ever forgive him for what he’d said today, but if Nate wound up dead, he was going after her. He’d tell her the truth and beg her to take him back.

Butfuck! He couldn’t do that. His anger at her had been barely leashed at the clubhouse. He’d held back only because there were people present that he respected. He hadn’t wanted to traumatize Krystal. She’d been through enough.

Damn it all to hell, he was his father’s son after all. One argument, and he’d been ready to hit a woman in anger. That’s just how men were, like his mom had said. Him and Nate. Both complete assholes.

Genetics was a bitch, and she had Dog by the balls, squeezing tight.

At least he wasn’t as fucked up as Nate. The fuckwad had raped at least three women by Dog’s count—Krystal, Blow’s sister, and the woman in Asheville. No telling if there were more, but Dog wouldn’t have been surprised. Nate thought he was protected by the police and local officials, and he was.

But that was just on the outside. He wasn’t protected in Dog’s world.

Dog had to get his head on straight. He couldn’t make the same mistake Final Blow had last Saturday, thinking more about his sister than the fight. Dog had one target, one focus, and that was ending Nate’s sorry life.
