And then a picture slides onto the screen. Sloan, with a gag in her mouth and terror in her eyes, as a suited goon tugs a burlap sack over his head.

“He has Sloan!” Rage surges through me. “That fucking bastard!”

“Who?” I don’t answer because my blood is boiling and fury tightens the muscles in my throat. I can’t form a word. “Beckett, who has Sloan?”

“My old man. He just sent me a picture.”

Dixon knows a little bit about Daddy Daniels and his checkered past littered with gang association, drugs, and mysterious deaths. And now, he’s adding kidnapping to his resume of dirty deeds.

“I’m on my way. Wait for me and we’ll figure this out.”

I drop my phone onto the floor without saying anything else. Wait for him? My thoughts twist with all the things that could be happening while Iwait for him.

There’s a small vase on the table right in easy reach. I pick it up and hurl it against the bathroom door. As soon as the glass shatters and the shards spray outward, I shake my head.

Cool it, Daniels.The last thing I want is for Sloan to come home to find another place trashed and her shit destroyed.

I walk over to pick up the jagged base. But when I crouch to eye level with the table, I spy something much more interesting.

I have seen enough TV commercials to know exactly what this little white stick is. Before I flip it over, I say a little prayer. I’m praying for a minus sign.

But when I look, when I flip it over, my gut clenches.

I’ve got to find Sloan.

Because she’s my woman, yes.

And also because she’s pregnant with my baby.
