Rebelle’s breath was heaving out of her as she saw more and more videos of his anger popping up. Her hands began to shakewith knowledge that she’d let this man fool her. She’d let his good-natured façade and sunny smile trick her into thinking he was someone worth letting into her shelter.

Dear God, what if he turned his violent temper on her? Or the animals?

She’d been so gullible, so foolish.

Not anymore.

Chapter 6

Whistling an old Metallica tune, Will pushed open the door to Ruby’s Diner, excitement coursing through his veins as he thought about getting to the shelter and looking after the animals, and seeing Rebelle.

He was starting to break down her walls, he could feel it. She was letting him in, showing him more tasks at the shelter and she even let him accompany her to the vet.

Confined in her truck, he’d let the silence between them settle, not needing to break it, just enjoying the time together. The warmth emanating from her body kept his temperature up. Her scent, that delicious soft floral made his mouth water. He’d longed to reach for her, bury his face in her neck and inhale her sweet scent, taste her rosebud lips but he’d kept his hands to himself.

He hadn’t been this excited about anything for so long. All for picking up dogshit and spending time with a beautiful prickly female? Call him crazy but he finally felt alive.

“What’re you so happy about, Mr. Billionaire?” Ruby’s gruff voice broke into his thoughts.

“Just another beautiful day, and I get to see you, of course.” He shot her his award-winning smile and she smirked at him before waving him off.

“Coffee?”

“Extra strong, and a couple of those delicious donuts please, Ruby.”

As Ruby turned away to prep his coffee, Will spotted Justine at a booth, eyeing him warily as she shoveled pancakes into her mouth.

“It’s the baby,” she mumbled around a mouthful.

He laughed and made his way over to her. “I ain’t judging.”

She swallowed and shook her head. “I’m just so hungry all the time. Blake made me toast, eggs and bacon this morning and yet I’m sneaking off here desperate to get my hands on pancakes.”

“If you want pancakes, then eat them. Don’t deny yourself, otherwise no one is happy. Also, I’m sure Blake would love to make you pancakes, he thinks the sun shines out of your-”

She arched a brow at him.

“-smile?” he finished lamely.

“Nice save,” she smirked, pouring more syrup over her pancakes. “What are you doing here?”

“Just grabbing a coffee before heading to the shelter.”

She side-eyed him while munching on another forkful of pancakes. “How’s that going?”

He took his coffee from Ruby and dropped a kiss on her cheek, leaving her another fifty-dollar tip.

“It’s going great. I love spending time with the animals, doing something to help them and I’ve got a few ideas on how to help the shelter with marketing to get some more money coming in.”

“And what about the owner of the shelter? You treating her right?”

Will actually felt his cheeks redden under her intense mama bear stare. “I’m trying, she won’t let me. Any tips for handling Rebelle would be much appreciated.” He put his hands together, begging.

She scrutinized him for a moment before she sighed. “Blake will kill me for helping you with her. I can kiss extra pancakes goodbye but try raspberry tea.”

He pumped his fist. “Yes! Thank you, girl, you will not regret helping me.” He bent and kissed her cheek.

“Don’t give me a reason to regret it. My future husband and baby daddy is a very powerful man.”
