“Okay, great.” She expected him to say more but he just turned on his heel and left. The shelter grew cold and empty with his absence, but she shrugged it off. Instead, she thought aboutthe cattery she wanted building and started sketching out ideas for the interior.

She tried to concentrate but her mind kept flashing back to the look of hurt that crossed his face earlier. The dip in his normally smooth brow, the hint of sadness in his ocean eyes that he tried to hide, the flat line of his mouth that usually held its trademark award-winning smile. She tried to brush it off but couldn’t and later that evening when she was curled up on the sofa with Bryan at her feet, she messaged him.

She was annoyed at being the one to give in and message him. He’d said he would update her so why was she having to chase him? She angrily jabbed at the phone screen.

Rebelle: So? How did it go?

She saw him come online, the gray ticks turned blue and then he was typing.

Will: Are you actually messaging me first?

She scowled at his message, could practically see his smug grin, and grumbled to herself as she replied.

Rebelle: I instantly regretted it.

Will: Did you just make a funny?

Forgetting herself, a smile slipped free and she snorted before rearranging her scowl.

Rebelle: For the first and last time.

Will: It’s late, get some sleep. I’ll tell you about it tomorrow.

Rebelle: About that…I was thinking of taking one of those days off you mentioned.

She nibbled her lip as he began typing, waiting for his response. She would get up even earlier in the morning to sort the animals if she needed to, if he couldn’t manage it.

Then an image of a random man just blinking appeared.

Will: I don’t think I read that right.

Will: You?

Will: Take a day off?

She smiled again, she could hear the sarcasm. She didn’t reply, instead she brushed her teeth. She decided to keep Bryan in the home tonight, she didn’t want to take him back to the shelter. She settled him on the couch and kissed Parfait goodnight and got into bed. Her phone started vibrating and she looked down.

Will video call.

She panicked. How did she answer this? Did she even want to? She tapped the screen but nothing happened and then it disappeared.

Will:You have to swipe up. Ready?

She barely had time to read the message before he was calling again. She slid her finger over the screen and then his face appeared.

“Why do you want a day off?” he asked, without preamble. She took him in, his wide mouth pinched in displeasure, but his eyes were sparkling as usual, so she wasn’t worried he was actually mad and as usual his green eye snagged her attention. Her tongue grew twenty times heavier as he ran a hand through the scruff on his chin and jaw and the rasp echoed down the line.

“Uh, errands?”

His nostrils flared. “You sure about that?”

“Yes.”

“Who are these supposed errands with?”

“Justine,” she replied and that seemed to placate him. Just then Parfait jumped onto the bed and began purring around the phone.

“Your girlfriend is missing you,” Rebelle grumbled, turning the phone to Parfait.
