Profound hunger gripped him and it was an urgency she matched, reaching between them and wrapping her fingers around his cock, pumping him and twisting her hands inpunishing strokes that had his toes curling and curses spilling from his lips.

“Please, William. Now.” Her plea in that stern voice, coupled with the way she sighed his name had him gripping himself and pushing into her.

She was warm, wet and welcoming and he grunted as he slid through her. His thrusts soon turned languid and slow, taking his time. If it was their last time, he wanted it to last forever.

He committed every breath, every utterance to memory. Every scratch down his back she created as she fought against the intensity that she tried to hide from. He wouldn’t let her. He made her relax into it, accept the slow thrusts and affectionate words and meaningful touches and he swallowed her strangled moan as her body finally gave in to him. He followed right behind her, his climax rippling through him in a jaw clenching, bone snapping breathless burst.

They hadn’t fucked, they’d made love and looking in her eyes, she knew it too.

And as she lay, draped across him as was now customary, snoring softly, he whispered those three words into the night.

Rebelle woke the next morning, the heat of Will at her back, his heavy arm draped over her, holding her to him in a crushing grip. Like he was scared to let her go. Instead of making her anxious or claustrophobic, she relished his embrace.

Will’s face nestled into the curve of her neck, his warm steady breaths coasting over her skin, causing small shivers to wrack her body and push herself back against him.

The idea that they weren’t meant to be doing this anymore briefly flitted through her mind until she shoved the depressing thought away. She gave herself another moment to enjoy thesleepy bliss before she reluctantly extricated herself from his octopus arms.

Rebelle petted Bryan on the head and went to the bathroom to wash up. When she came out, Will sat on the bed, facing her, wearing just his boxers and her stare raked over him, taking in this giant of a man in her tiny trailer. It was almost laughable how at home and right he looked here. She memorized the thick, muscled, tattoo-covered body, her eyes catching on the odd designs, but they were all familiar now. She knew his body almost as well as her own.

In lieu of having an awkward conversation where they just reiterated that last night was the last time, she clapped her hands together. “You wanna take the cats or dogs today?”

His cool stare pierced her, assessing before a look of resignation crossed his face. He offered her a small smile. “What do you think?”

They dressed in silence and went their separate ways at the shelter. She thought at one point she could hear him talking to the cats but when she went into the cattery, he was silent.

Just as she was opening the doors to the public for the second time, Jae, Blake and another man that Blake introduced them to as, Neil, Daisy’s caseworker arrived. Apparently after the police had threatened Gerry with a lengthy jail sentence, he’d sung like a canary. They had enough evidence that they believed Daisy was home free but just needed the court to make it official.

Rebelle was relieved to know this was nearly over and Daisy could find a new family who would give her the home she deserved. As they were leaving, Jae mentioned he had some kittens that had been picked up from a farm. They were feral and hated human contact and Rebelle caught the glee in Will’s eyes, knowing he couldn’t wait to get his hands on them and gain their trust.

“I think the mother got spooked and left them but we’re keeping an eye out for her. They just need some fluids. I can bring them by tomorrow?” Jae said.

Rebelle nodded. “Sounds good.”

The day went quick. More people turned up to view the animals and morePurrfect Matchforms were completed. Rebelle was on a high throughout the day and each time she spotted Will he seemed the same, big smile on his face, friendly with those who came to the shelter. But she could see his sparkling eyes were dimmed, his smile held a bit of strain and though he tried to hide it, she could tell.

At the end of the day, he helped her finish up then left and she didn’t hear from him all evening. She tried to distract herself by playing with Daisy and socializing her with Bryan who was desperate to play with her.

She tried to stargaze but just found herself thinking about Will and wishing he was there. Which was precisely why it was a good plan to stay apart. She was already so dependent on him, and she had promised herself she would never depend on a man again.

The next day, Will turned up and greeted her before heading straight into the cattery. She didn’t get a chance to do as much admin now they were open to the public. It was a huge step for the shelter but she wasn’t sure how she would juggle dealing with the public, spending time with the animals and tackling the business side of things too.

She cornered Will later in the day to discuss. “Do you think we should hire someone?”

He cocked his head to the side, a lock of auburn hair falling over his forehead and she ached to brush it back. “Why?”

“Because it’s busy and you’ll be gone soon. I won’t be able to do all this on my own.”

His smile stayed in place, but she saw a muscle tick in his jaw.

When he didn’t say more, she added, “Do we need to hire or find volunteers?”

“Probably one of each so we know for sure that you have someone helping every day. I’ll get it sorted, you don’t need to worry about a thing. Whatever you need, I’ll make it happen.” He smiled again but it wasn’t anywhere near its full wattage.

She shrugged. “I can do it. I just, I don’t know, wanted to confirm that was the right thing to do? Hire versus volunteers.”

“Whatever you think, that’s the right thing to do. I’ll handle it.”
