Page 13 of Winning Her Over

Due to my mobility issues, my place is pretty spartan as far as decorations or things that could potentially trip me up. I also employ a cleaning lady, so the house stays mostly clean. I did some light tidying up yesterday in anticipation of Blaire’s visit, so I have no concerns about this unscheduled dinner.

Even better, I can heat up all the leftovers from yesterday.

But food isn’t on my mind when I close the door behind her, and Blaire’s in front of me, pressing me against the hard wood and claiming my mouth in a searing kiss full of need.

Releasing the hand grips of my crutches, I pull her harder against me. I’m hot and hard in an instant. Lust and something more pulsing through me with every frantic beat of my heart as our tongues glide together.

Blaire’s pebbled nipples poke through the thin layer of her top and press into my chest.

Pulling back, she grips my lower lip in her teeth, releasing it with a wet pop that leaves me shuddering. “Ready for dessert?” She whispers, swiping her tongue along my lips before nibbling on the corner of my mouth.

I’ve always had a sweet tooth, but Blaire’s the most decadent treat I’ve ever had in my arms. It’s tempting to gorge myself.

But after the mistakes I’ve already made, I need to pace myself and be completely upfront with her.

“Why don’t we go into the living room and talk first?”

Blaire’s entire body stiffens, and she pushes away from me. “The ‘we need to talk’ bit already? If this is about last night, again, I’m sorry. It was a family thing that came up suddenly. Maybe this is a mistake.”

Reaching for her, I thread my fingers through hers, trying to ignore the way my crutch attached only to my forearm is bangingagainst my leg. “Forget about last night. You’re here now and I don’t want any other misunderstandings between us.”

Her teeth pinch down on her lower lip and she nods. “Okay. Let’s talk.”

Regretfully, I have to untangle our fingers and grab my crutch again. She follows me into the living room and watches as I remove my crutches, lean them against the end table, and carefully angle myself onto the couch.

Blaire drops to the cushion next to me and curls her legs up underneath her. I envy her smooth and easy movements. It’s amazing the things you take for granted until they are lost to you forever.

Once again, I’m struck by the enormity of what I’m asking of her. It’s not just about our age difference, it’s the fact that I can’t do many of things that even other men my age can. We will never go rock climbing together, surfing, and even a long hike might be too much for my knees and hips. Is it really fair to ask her to tie herself to a man like me?

“Leland?” she prompts when I don’t say anything.

“Lee,” I rasp. “Call me Lee.”

Her smile is like a rainbow after a storm, filling me with hope and happiness.

Grasping her hands, I smile back and begin.

“Blaire, I want more than sex. I’m interested in seeing where a relationship could go between us.”

Her hands tighten on mine, her smile losing some of its brightness.

After a long, painful moment of silence, I ask, “Is it my legs?

Tugging her hands away, she lowers her gaze. “No, it’s not your legs.” She peeks up. “And it’s not about your dick, either. Sorry I made that rude comment about it to Vanna.”

Ruefully, I laugh. “If I had a dime for every time someone said something related to my disability, I could afford a Porschelike yours.” Reaching out, I stroke along her hand, marveling over her long, slim fingers with their perfectly manicured lavender nails. “It's fine. Besides, you know it works well.”

Her giggle sounds forced, and I stop trying to make light of things.

“So what is it? That we work together or I'm your boss-”

Blaire cuts me off. “No, it’s me. I have some things going on in my life that make having a relationship almost impossible.”

“I see,” I say carefully, trying not to let my disappointment show. “We’re having the ‘it’s not you’ talk, after all.”

Blaire yanks her hands from mine and stands. “It’s not like that, Lee!”

“Then tell me what it is like. Please. Help me understand, Blaire.” I grab my crutches and secure my forearms into the bands before getting to my feet and gripping the handles as I stare at the woman who I want to get to know better because I fear I’ve already gone and fallen for her.
