Page 9 of Winning Her Over

She hoots with laughter. “You didn’t!”

“I did, and he invited me to his place for dinner tonight.”

“Well, it’s about time! The whole office is tired of the two of you eye-fucking each other every time you’re within ten feet of each other.”

I roll my eyes and easily whip the Porsche into an open spot on the street. Parallel parking has nothing on me. “The entire office? All seven of us?”

“Yeah, it’s really sickening. I know Amy crosses herself every time you two break eye contact.”

Throwing my head back, I crack up. “You’re crazy, girl!”

We head into the deli, which is packed for lunch time and thankfully she stops with the smut talk while we wait our turn in line. The minute we grab our subs and pickles and squeeze ourselves into a minuscule table for two, she picks right back up. “So, is it official? Are you two a thing? You and Leland can double date with Jake and me!”

I pause in the act of unwrapping my sub, the delicious smells of ham, salami, and provolone cheese making my stomach rumble in anticipation. “No, no, and no again.” I finish unwrapping and take a huge bite, relishing the meaty mouthful and the frustrated look on my bestie's face.

“You’re just being plain mean.” Vanna digs into her own food and we munch in silence for maybe a full minute before she whines, “You seriously aren’t going to tell me anything else?”

Spearing a pickle slice with a toothpick, I shrug. “There really isn’t a lot to tell.” I pause before stuffing the pickle in my mouth. “Other than Leland has excellent hearing, he heard us talking about his dick.”

The shriek Vanna lets out has other customers’ heads whipping our way.

“It’s so freaking good!” she cries out, waving at people.

“Nice cover,” I snort.

Vanna glares, then unleashes a giggle. “Did he really?”

I nod. “Oh yeah. Then he informed me it does indeed work.”

“Showed you too, apparently,” she says with a smirk.

Being a redhead with fair skin really sucks sometimes. Not only is the sun brutal on my skin, but I blush over everything. I’m sure I’m cherry tomato red currently.

“You’re not acting that happy,” Vanna notes, putting her sub down. “I thought you liked him.”

Can’t pull anything over on her. “I do. You know I do. It’s just, I’m not sure how all this is going to work.”

Vanna reaches across the table and covers my hand with hers. “With his legs?”

“Maybe. I mean, I don’t even know what his condition is.”

She squeezes my hand. “Well, find out tonight.”

“How?”

Those large blue eyes of hers roll almost completely back. “Duh, ask him, silly.”

“I couldn’t!” I exclaim, shaking my head. “That would be so rude.”

Leaning back, she crosses her arms. “How is asking the man you blew more about him a rude thing?”

Two older guys at the table next to us cough, while trying in vain not to stare at us.

“Keep your voice down,” I hiss, avoiding eye contact with anyone else.

“I will when you tell me what’s so wrong about just asking him? You need open communication in a relationship.”

I toss up my hands. “We’re not in a relationship!”
