I frowned. Didn’t she know there were no other girls? There hadn’t been, since that night. “What do you mean?”

She shrugged. “You’re just trying to get me alone again.”

Taking her hand in mine, I pulled her to an empty part of the lawn.

“Ella, what do I need to do to reassure you?” I let the mallet hit the ground and rested my hands on top of it.

Her blue eyes were so captivating, even as she looked at me with concern. I stepped closer, hearing her breathe hitch from our proximity. “Don’t think for one second that there’s anyone I want but you.”

She blinked, her lips opening as she stared up at me. My eyes trailed down to her pink lips, remembering what it felt like to have them against mine.

But I needed to step back. Remember why we were here. What this was all about.

“We’re here for our chapters, right?” I offered her. “So we’re going to spend time together as Presidents. That’s it.”

“Okay,” she agreed, her voice subdued. “Should we smash some pumpkins now?”

“Yes,” I agreed.

Even though I didn’t need to touch her, I couldn’t help it. I certainly didn’t need to wrap my arms around hers, or to move her hands onto the mallet and then put mine over the top. But I did.

Because I was weak for this girl, and it was all I’d been aching for ever since she left my room.

“Charming,” she whispered, like she realized where we were all of the sudden. “What are we doing?”

“Isn’t it obvious?” I murmured, raising both our hands up and swinging the mallet back. “We’re having fun.”

Guiding both of our hands down, I relished how our bodies fit together—just like I had that night.

I didn’t look over at the sea of pink and blue that had mixed, but I was sure they were watching us. But if my guys saw me with my hands all over her, maybe it would give them a sign to keep their hands off of her.

When the hammer hit the soft pumpkin, it smashed into it, and I was surprised at the little shriek of laughter that emitted from Ella’s lips. So shewasn’tas unaffected as she appeared. A big grin lit her face, and her eyes brightened.

We stayed like that for a moment longer than was probably acceptable, just staring at each other. Fuck, I liked it. Being wrapped around her like this. I wondered what other things I could show her, just as an excuse to hold her.

Fuck, she was beautiful. A little tendril escaped her bun, resting against her cheek, and I held myself back from brushing it back behind her ear.

“What do you think?” I asked her, stepping back. I needed the space, before I did something stupid like kiss her again. If yesterday was any indication, she didn’t want me, and I needed to remember that. It was enough just to spend time with her like this, wasn’t it?

Her eyes brightened. “Can I do that again?”

I pretended to think about it before I bowed playfully. “This one’s all yours.”

She paused. “But I need to pay for it, right? I know this is your philanthropic event… I couldn’t possibly…”

“Relax, Princess.” I winked. “I got it. You can get the next one.”

“Oh.” She blushed as I walked over to my treasurer, handing him a five dollar bill. The rest of the sorority girls had spread out into little clumps throughout the field. Though we offered just one swing for a dollar, a lot of them had donated five.

“You didn’t have to do that,” she murmured as I stood back at her side.

“Maybe I just wanted to watch you smash the shit out of this pumpkin.”

She looked thoughtfully at the pumpkin, and then back up at me. “Will you tell me about it? Your philanthropy?”

I nodded. Each Greek life organization on campus had their own, raising funds for a different cause, and we were no exception. Swallowing roughly, I focused on the pumpkin instead of her face. “We support the Children’s Cancer Hospital. It helps with research and care, especially for those who can’t afford it. I…” Shaking my head, I took the hammer from her hands. Ella had been watching me, not speaking. I couldn’t explain my personal connection to the hospital. It was too personal, too raw.

When I’d come to Castleton, I’d known I wanted to join the Delta Sigma Iota chapter, just like my dad, but when I’d found out what cause they supported, I hadn’t even considered the rest.
