I originally went into college pre-law because I wanted to join the firm, to carry on his legacy. But now, it was more than that. I genuinely loved what I was learning. What I was setting out to do.

And yet, I wasn't sure if his vision for my future and mine were the same anymore. If what I wanted was to move home and work underneath my father.

Maybe it was time to stop trying to make him proud, and to focus on making myself proud instead.

It was a start, at least.

After saying our goodbyes, I hung up the phone, shuffling towards class.

Wishing it wouldn’t be another three days before I had a chance to see Ella again.

“Okay, thisisn’t fair,” Ella bit out, looking around the movie theater we rented out for the evening, both the fraternity andsorority members excited to see the new superhero movie that just came out this week.

“You told me to plan it,” I shrugged, settling into one of the two seats I’d saved for us. “Besides, how else was I going to compete againstpuppies?”

I’ll admit, I’d been stumped at first, especially since she’d given me less than a week to figure something out for usallto do together.

Despite the short notice, we’d been able to pull this together fairly quickly, thanks to one of my fraternity brother’s families owning the movie theater. Not just the local chain, but the entire corporation. Naturally, I choose not to share this information with the girl next to me.

The blonde who somehow always looked beautiful, even in a plain navy Castleton University crewneck and a pair of tight jeans.

“Just sit back and watch the movie, Princess.” I wasn’t opposed to finding other ways to shut her up if she didn’t.

I could see her bite back a retort, and I hid my smile behind the bucket of popcorn.

The theater grew dark, and even the hush whispers of dozens of college students faded away as the opening sequence started.

Ella’s knee brushed against mine, and I was surprised when she didn’t move it, keeping that tiny connection between us. It felt like something new.

Maybe I could work with that.

“What do you think?” I whispered at one point, earning a glare from Ella, who quickly shushed me before I could say anything else.

I’d never had so much fun watching a movie before, but I supposed I’d never seen one with someone I’d reallylikedbefore, either. It was different with the guys. Watching her face, seeing her reactions—it was almost as good as the movie itself.

Plus, I had the perk of her body next to mine, and even when our fingers brushed over the popcorn bowl, or our elbowstouched, she didn’t pull away. Every time, it was like a little shock to my system.

I knew what she looked like, sounded like, feltlike, and no matter how much she seemed to want to run away from it, there was no way I could forget any of it. And yet at this moment, when halfway through the movie, she looked over and gave me a warm smile? It was priceless.

I’d do anything to earn it again.

The night at the movies had been a win, and I was already planning the next one. Another way to make Ella smile, to see her come out of her shell.

All around me, the library was full of the sounds of students typing away on their computers, the occasional printing of papers, or the scratch of a chair against the floor. A brunette girl ran back and forth behind the desk, helping students out who needed to check out books or locate something.

And then, all of my senses narrowed, and everything faded away as I came across the girl I always wanted to see with papers spread all around her on the table, her face furrowed in concentration as she sketched on a piece of paper.

I looked over the table, eyeing the paper closest to me. It looked like an illustration from a fairytale book I read as a kid.

“What are you working on, Princess?” I ask quietly. Even if we weren’t on the quiet floor of the library, I liked to respect people’s study space.

“Oh!” she startled, clearly not having even seen me until I spoke. “Cameron.Geez. Don’t just sneak up on a girl like that.”

Sitting in the chair next to her, I let my backpack rest on the floor before I looked over her designs. “This looks really cool, Ella.”

“Thank you.” She dipped her head. “I’m designing some costumes for the spring musical.”

“That’s amazing. Are you going to be in it?”
