“Really?” My mom raised an eyebrow. It wasn’t like she didn’t have experience with fraternity boys—she’d been in a sorority in her day. Though hers had looked a lot different from how PRS did now.

“It’s not like that,” I protested, though I didn’t really know what itwaslike. “He’s really sweet.” My voice was low, hardly a murmur.

And although I’d invited him home with me for Christmas, to spend these last weeks before classes started back up with me, I wondered how my parents would have reacted if Ihadbrought him home.

Would they like him? Why was it so important to me theydid?

“As long as he makes you happy,” my mother said. “That’s all that matters, sweetie.”

Audrey reached over, squeezing my ankle as I nodded.

Looking down at my phone, I realized I’d never responded to his last text.

Ella

Good. We’re just camped out on the couch watching old Christmas movies.

Cam

What’s on? I’ll join in.

You’re gonna… watch the same movie?

Yeah.

Why?

Is that weird?

No. I like it.

I quickly sent him our next movie choice: my favorite,Rudolph, since this one was almost over.

He texted me throughout the whole thing, sending me histhoughts, and I’d never imagined that watching a movie together long distance could be this muchfun.

One more week,I thought to myself, closing my eyes as I tucked myself into bed that night. Once I got through New Year’s, we’d be back at CU, and maybe I’d stop feeling like my heart was on my sleeve.

New Year’s Eve.A night of champagne, confetti poppers, and those god-awful noisemakers which I really could have done without.

But another year was here. I wrapped my arm around my waist, looking out at the party spread throughout the club building. I didn’t really feel like celebrating much—not when Cam wasn’t here.

Our family normally went to the same party at our country club every year for the occasion. Growing up, we’d been surrounded by other kids our age, but now, surrounded by dozens of other college kids drinking and dancing and laughing, I moved to the outside patio, staring out over the grounds.

It was chilly, but not enough to go back inside in search of my jacket. Not yet, at least.

“What’s a pretty girl like you doing out here all alone?” A familiar voice said behind me, and a surge of adrenaline burst through my veins.

I turned, finding the dark-haired man I’d grown so fond of over the last few months standing there, wearing a delicious suit, looking at me like I’d hung the moon in the sky.He was here.

“Cam!” I shrieked, jumping into his arms. “What are you doing here?”

“It’s almost midnight.”

“So?”

“So… tradition dictates that you owe me a kiss.” He tapped his finger against his cheek. “They say whoever you kiss at midnight, you’ll spend the rest of the year with. So obviously, I couldn’t let you kiss someone else.”

I rolled my eyes. “Like I would have kissed anyone else.”
