With wide eyes, Jake just lay on the ground, stunned by his assault.

Pushing Chase, I lunged at him with anger spewing out of me. “What’s wrong with you, Chase? This is my friend Jake.”

Still watching Jake on the ground, Chase’s chest heaved rapidly as he let his temper flare. “He had his hands on you,” he seethed.

“Yes, he was congratulating me on getting a job,” I screamed.

Tears now streamed down my face as I leaned down to help Jake up.

“I’m so sorry, Jake,” I cried.

Brushing himself off, Jake looked at me and then Chase. “It’s okay,” he stuttered. “Are you all right?” he asked, turning to me.

Nodding, I wiped away my tears. “Yes. Jake, this is my… boyfriend,” I said, barely above a whisper. I was almost too embarrassed at that moment to call Chase my boyfriend.

Chase opened his mouth to speak, but I threw my hand up, motioning for him to stop. “Jake, I’m so sorry. Chase can be a little overprotective sometimes. Chase, tell Jake you’re sorry,” I grumbled, through clenched teeth.

Staring at me with wide eyes, Chase looked like he wanted to argue, but his shoulders slumped, and his body relaxed.

Extending his hand, he shook Jake’s. “I’m sorry. I saw you touch Lizzie, and I freaked out. I hope you accept my apology,” Chase said. He sounded sincere, and I felt my anger diminish as I looked at the now pained expression on his face.

“It’s okay. I gotta go. My girlfriend is waiting for me,” Jake said. He gave me a sad look that made my stomach drop before he turned and walked away.

As Jake walked away, I kept my composure until he was out of sight.

“What in the hell is wrong with you?” I yelled.

Hanging his head low, Chase didn’t say anything.

“Say something,” I demanded. I was about to walk away when Chase finally opened his mouth.

“I’m sorry, Lizzie. I don’t know what happened. I saw his hand on your arm while I was sitting in my car waiting for you and the next thing I knew, I was shoving him onto the ground,” Chase growled, in a low voice.

He took a step toward me, but I took a step back and away from him.

“You can’t hit everyone I talk to,” I shouted.

I used to think his protectiveness was adorable, but now, it was a problem.

“You can’t do that again,” I began. “Chase, I grew up in violence. I won’t be thrown back into that world again.”

With eyes growing wide, Chase reached for me. “I promise, Lizzie, you have my word. I’ll control my anger.”

“You better,” I said, as I marched toward the parking lot. As I jumped into his SUV, I didn’t say another word to him. He deserved my silence.

He stole glances at me the whole time, and I knew my silent treatment was killing him, but I meant what I had said. I couldn’t go back to a life full of anger and violence. I just couldn’t.

“Don’t follow me,” I angrily yelled, as I jumped out of his SUV when he pulled up to the hotel.

Without even speaking a word, Chase just drove away and did as he was told. Somehow, my heart broke as he left.

CHAPTER 19

Chase

Afire had exploded deep inside me as I watched some jackass in a blue polo shirt touch my girl. My world.

Watching him next to her, one would have thought they were a couple. Lizzie belonged with a nicely dressed college student. Instead, she had fallen for me. A damaged fighter with a broken past.
