“How is he? What the hell happened?” I ask Alex, grabbing his hand tightly. “What happened, A-Alex?” My voice breaks on his name, and I bend down on the balls of my feet as hot tears spill down my cheeks.

“Charlie!” He goes on one knee in front of me and helps me up. He leads me to a row of chairs and helps me sit down. Autumn and Andrea hover around looking immensely frightened.

“He’s currently in surgery, but I think he’ll be fine,” Alex murmurs softly while patting my arm.

“You don’t know?! Oh God. He was just going to go to his apartment downtown,” I tell him tearfully. “What happened? I called his number and that dreadful man picked up.”

Alex curses under his breath. “His phone must have slipped out in the melee.”

“Melee?” I grab his hand again. “What melee?” He gives a pointed glance at Autumn and Andrea. I swallow, understanding that he doesn’t want to mention it in front of them. So, it has to do with Massimo Moratti then? That fucker.

“You’re freezing.” Alex squeezes my hand in his, then gets up to take off his jacket. He wraps it around my shoulders, thevast material swallowing me. He glances down at my feet with a frown. Then he starts taking his shoes off.

“Don’t worry about me, I’m fine,” I tell him. He ignores me.

He pauses at his socks, then mutters, “Fuck no, you’re not.” He takes them off and puts them on my feet. I’m not even in the right frame of mind to be grossed out by his socks. Then he slips his boots back on his bare feet.

“Thank you.” I whisper, grabbing the jacket at my shoulders and sinking into it.

Just then a man in scrubs comes out of one of the numerous doors in the hallway and makes his way to us. I jump to my feet eagerly.

“How is he, doctor?” Alex asks.

“Mr. Beaufort made it through the surgery successfully.” I blow out a long breath of relief at the words. “He’s currently unconscious because of the blood loss and the medication he was given, but he should be awake in the morning.”

He doesn’t wakeup in the morning like the doctor had promised. It’s now past six PM and he’s still unconscious. The doctor reassures us that it’s normal sometimes. He looks so peaceful. I hope he’s having nice dreams at least. I haven’t left his side since we were led to his private ward last night. I’m never letting him out of my sight again. Ever.

After we had received good news from the doctor last night, Alex sent Andrea and Autumn home, to their great reluctance. After they left, he told me what had happened. Ezra went up to confront Massimo and got shot in the stomach. Suddenly, my concern shifts to pure rage. I'm so pissed at this man. How couldhe do something so dangerous without letting me know? Or at least giving me a warning.

He went all the way to Rhode Island, knowing he might possibly lose his life. He didn’t think I should be part of that decision? He was so lucky the bullet went through his flesh without causing any irreparable damage to his organs.

There’s a soft knock on the door, and Andrea walks in. She's carrying a duffel bag in one hand and a lunch bag in another.

“Hi.” She gives me a small smile lifting up the bags in her hands. “I brought you a change of clothes and some toiletries. I also come bearing meals, because I know you haven’t eaten all day.”

I give her a wane smile and offer, “Thanks, Andrea.” I glance at Ezra on the bed. I give his hand a soft squeeze before getting up from the chair next to him. I take the duffel bag from Andrea and walk into the bathroom to freshen up and change. Perks of a private ward.

I brush my teeth and take a quick shower. I’m putting on my clothes when Andrea shouts my name. I run out of the bathroom in just a blouse and panties, my heart in my throat.

He’s awake.

“Ezra!” I sob and run toward his bed.

He squints at me. “I’m barely awake,Bébé,and you’re already trying to seduce me?” he says weakly.

I glance down at his smiling face. He still looks a little pale but he’s awake. He’salive. “You’re such a jerk,” I scold, sniffing to hold back the tears I can feel stinging my eyes. “The biggest jerk.”

“Bébé.”

“Don’tbébéme. How could you, Ezra?” I pause when the door closes and glance back to see Andrea has left us alone. I turn back to continue scolding Ezra. “You went back there without telling me. I almost lost you. What do you expect me todo if I lose you, Ezra? How do you expect me to survive without you?”

“Charlotte.” He starts to get up from the bed, but I gently push him back.

“You can’t get up yet,” I warn.

He grabs my hand. “I fully intended to make it up to you. I wanted us to have a fresh start without anything hanging over our heads.”

“Not at the risk of losing you. You’re in the mafia? I don’t care anymore. As long as you keep coming home to me alive. I need you, Ezra. I love you.”
