“But back to yoursituation,as you’re putting it, my dear, it’s simple.”

“Oh yeah? What’s that?” I set up my little TV tray over my little couch to put my food on it, along with setting the bottle and my papers on the couch next to me.

“You haven’t found a man sincethatboy, and it’s time to get one. I want grandchildren before I get too old to enjoy them, and I don’t want you to be lonely like me.”

“I thought you loved your life?”

“I do, but having constant dick would be nice.”

I don’t even try to be outraged by her. I’m used to it. “And the one to break me is the one I let in?”

“It wouldn’t hurt.” I just know she’s shrugging. “Revenge fuck the shit out of him until he forgets his own name, numbers, and then break him like he did you.”

“And that will help me find a forever man?” I really don’t understand my mom’slogicsometimes. Pouring the wine, I keep going until it reaches the rim of the glass. I should just ditch it and drink straight from the bottle since I won’t be sharing it.

“Why the hell not?”

I plop myself down on the couch and settle in to grade papers. “No, Mom, just … no.” I take a long sip of the deliciousness.

“It wouldn’t hurt. You would then know what all the girls fussed about.”

Dropping my head, I shake it against the blanket draped over the back. “Mom.”

“I’ll call your grandma, and we’ll gang bang you with pressure. You know we will,” she threatens.

“Oh my God, Mom! That’s not what that means. I’m going to hang up now. I’m not going to lead Chase Thorne on, fuck him, and then treat him like he did me. I’m better than that—”

“The dick could be worth it.” She cuts me off.

“Hanging up. Good night, Mom. I love you.”

“Night and I love you, too. Just think it over.” She squeaks the last part in before I end our call. No way would I ever do something like that. What she proposes is sheer madness at a level only she and, unfortunately, my grandma are capable of.

But the idea of having sex with Chase—

“No, don’t go there. You’ll not go there, Angelica,” I scold myself. “Instead, you’re going to drink your wine, eat your reheated dinner, and grade these papers like a sane person.”

Chapter Seven

Chase

“You’re going to strike out again!” Will’s voice is barely audible over the sound of my truck taking off in a hurry to put distance between us and get away. I don’t acknowledge him as I fishtail my way from the barn and head for the county road.

After yesterday, I was bound and determined to give up my pursuit of Ms. Angelica Reece with the fine-as-fuck body and bright-blue eyes that illuminate her face. But I can’t bring myself to commit to that.

Aside from her body and the short tongue-lashing she gave me, something draws me to her. And it has nothing to do with the whole forbidden fruit thing my brother believes. There’s something deeper, something I’ve never given any thought to with any other woman—mainly because they’ve never ignited it in me before.

That’s why I head into town to pick up Ridge and put myself through the torture again to get her attention.

Disrespectful?

I have never been anything less than respectful to each woman I’ve been with in all my years and should not be desperate now. I never led them on to believe there would be more with our arrangement. I always made sure to get them off before myself and get them to where they needed to go afterward.

She doesn’t know me from Dick and has absolutely no right to judge me.

I turn off our dirt road, hitting pavement as my grip tightens around the steering wheel. My jaw sets as I eat up the distance to town.

I have never worked this hard or put this much effort into getting any woman’s attention before. Not even with myactualex-girlfriend, Cera Long. I never tried with her; she just worked until she didn’t anymore.
