“Hello, I’m Chase Thorne, Ridge’s uncle.” I turn on the smile that has never failed me before. Extending my free hand to her, I wait for her to take it, but she seems frozen in place.

“Ms. Reece?” Ridge’s concerned voice brings her out of it. She shakes my hand far too quickly for my liking, but I get a feel of her just the same. And that feeling is incredible.

There’s a hint of familiarity to that instant her bare flesh touched me. I try to scramble in order to figure out how I could possibly know this insanely attractive woman.

She doesn’t bat an eye at my smile and doesn’t instantly start to gush or get strange like most women do when they meet me.

I’m in uncharted waters.

And I don’t like it.

Something niggles in the back of my mind but remains just out of reach. There’s no way she’s one of my numerous exes. I may not have been with all of them for long, but I remember every face I was with in high school.

But this woman, I have to know. Will said as much.

Why the fuck did I never buy a yearbook?

I could end my suffering with a quick search.

Maybe Patience bought one?

Shaking my head, I get back on track, turning my attention to the woman who teaches my nephew. I’m positive I know her from somewhere.

“It’s veryniceto meet you, Ms. Reece?” I keep the smile in place, but she doesn’t succumb to its power and give me a first name.

Could I really have lost my touch?

I wasn’t overseasthatlong.

Taking off my hat, I run a hand over my head because fuck if I know what else to do.

“I’m going to get in the truck,” Ridge tells me. “I’ll see you tomorrow, Ms. Reece.”

“See you tomorrow, Ridge and remember what I said.” How is it fair my eleven-year-old nephew gets a wink, and I don’t?

“I won’t forget,” he confirms before hopping into the truck, leaving me alone with her.

“What did you tell him?” My need to get this woman to smile at me is dulled by the need to know what she said to him.

“I told him to just be himself and not let what others might say about him liking to do his homework early take his drive away from him.” She smiles, but I can tell it’s a forced one. “It was nice meeting you, Mr. Thorne. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to ensure the rest of the students get to where they need to be.”

She walks off, and I take a quick survey to find the parking lot is mostly empty now.

She just wanted to get away from me, but why?

“Please, call me Chase,” I shout to her, but it doesn’t stop her from leaving me. “Hate to see ’em leave, but love to watch ’em walk away,” I mutter to myself. Her round ass sways magnificently in her skirt. I’d love to see what she looks like at this angle in only those heels and with her hair down—

Ridge takes this second to lay on the horn and nearly blast my eardrums from my head from where I stand in front of my truck.

“I’m coming!” I shout, jogging back around to hop in. “What the shit, kid?”

“You were taking too long. I have chores and homework I want to get done before I can do anything else.” He lifts a single shoulder in response.

I stop from starting the truck and look at him. “This is strange.”

“What?”

I look out the windshield to where Ms. Reece continues to walk away. “All of it.”
