He makes his way over to us, triggering Roper to get up and come over as well.

“We’ll be on our best behavior, Mase. You don’t need to worry.” My smile is forced, something my brother knows all too well, and so do the other three men in the room.

“You better.” He stops in front of me. “No drama, Miles. I know you’re having a rough go with Alexa right now, but please don’t push her because—”

“If I push my woman, it pushes yours, and that means I get my ass not only kicked by you but Ma will also have my head for leather.”

His jaw clenches. “Correct.”

“Don’t worry, I’ll be on my very best behavior.” He’s my alpha, but it doesn’t mean I have to be completely honest with him. I have tried everything except one last thing to get through to Alexa. I don’t want to cause a scene, but if it’ll get a reaction out of my woman, I’ll do anything. I’ll probably regret it in one form or another—meaning my brother or mom’s wrath—but I’m willing to take the risk.

“That isn’t comforting,” he deadpans.

“You’ll live.” Patting him on the shoulder, I walk around the group. “Now, if y’all will excuse me, I have a few things to get in order before the big day.”

“Didn’t I just say no drama?” my brother barks.

“And there won’t be.” My voice is convincing, but I can’t pull the wool over my own eyes, let alone his or any of the guys. This could backfire, but I’m a desperate man.

What the fuck are you thinking?

Don’t worry.

Sometimes, I think I’m the saner of the two of us.

In your dreams.

Head held up high, I get in my Jeep, fire it up, and then dial a number I’m sure not only Mason will be pissed I’m calling but the others as well. And that includes getting a reaction out of Roper.

“Miles, babe, I wondered when you would come around.”

Chapter Sixteen

Alexa

Sucking in a deep breath, I suck my stomach in as much as possible, but to no avail. “This can’t be right.”

“What did you say, Alexa?” I cringe at forgetting there aren’t any solid doors separating me from my best friend. She’s standing on a little platform as the seamstress looks over her dress for a final time with our new friends Macy, Annabelle, and Spence watching.

“N-Nothing.” Turning to my right, my gaze fixates on my belly. Okay, maybe I’ve been stress eating, but I’ve taken advantage of Missy’s treadmill and free weights in her basement in the evenings to counteract any weight gain.

It seems to have failed.

“Is everything all right in there?” Oh right, Missy is here too. Her voice is right on the other side of the curtain shielding me from all of them. “You’ve been in there for a while.”

“I’m coming.” Doing my best to suck it in, I push the curtain back and step out with a practiced, forced smile. “I was just admiring my dress.” Rylie kept it simple yet elegant. The forest green material is light and breezy, gliding with each step I take. The halter top is a wide ring around my neck with a small slit over my breasts and the top of my back before it vanishes into a zipper. The middle has a false belt to bring in my waistline, and the first time I tried it on, it fit like a glove, but now it’s a little snug.

Shit.

Please don’t notice.

“Alexa, you’re going to rival Rylie.” Grabbing both of my hands, Spence lifts them from their place where I shielded their view of my stomach and up to my sides to take in the dress. His flamboyant ways have been uplifting, but not right now. “Stunning.” His gaze trails down me, but not in an uncomfortable way, and if I’m not mistaken, he pauses on my midriff.

Fuck. Fuck. Fuck!

Freeing myself, I walk around him to put the attention back on Rylie, where it all belongs. “I honestly thought you would wear pants to your own wedding.”

“I know, right?” She turns and looks at the back of her dress before looking at me. “Mason brings this out in me.”
