My woman has already had a baby? She doesn’t look it.

“I gave the baby up for his own safety and then disappeared.” Her food remains untouched, and so does mine.

“Shit, no wonder you’re struggling to trust me.” I force my hand to release the fork.

“That’s not why, Miles.” Desperately, she lunges over the table to grab my clenched hand. “Grant had a secret I always believed was myth. He’s a werewolf, and that’s what scared me away from you. Though they are small, I have puncture wounds on my upper arms and scratches along my stomach from his claws when he forced me to watch him shift.”

No fucking way.

“I’d like to say that’s where the tale ends, but it isn’t. I thought I was finally safe enough here to move on with my life, but Grant’s found me, Miles.” Her voice wobbles and then cracks.

Every piece of the puzzle the guys and I have been trying to figure out just fell into place. Fuck the meal. I need to get her out of here now, and somewhere I know she’ll be safe.

“You’re coming home with me.” I don’t allow her to question me as I pull out my phone and call Mason.

“What?” he barks.

“Quit being so touchy,” I snap. “I found out who the fucker is, and you’re not going to like this any more than I do.”

Chapter Twenty-Eight

Alexa

How have the past fifteen hours flown by in a flash? One minute, I’m telling Miles about Grant and my past which triggered something in him, not just me, and the next, my new home is in the process of being emptied.

Everything Carter helped me move in days ago was packed up and loaded into an army of pickups. I should have felt powerless to stop it, but the protective impulse that took over Miles after learning I believe Grant is here had me holding my tongue.

I was instructed nicely by Rylie and Macy after Mason and Miles both failed in ordering me to call into work and ask for some time off. I didn’t want to, and even though I saw their reasoning, I came to an agreement with my boss that I would work from Miles’s house while one of the guys would be posted outside when Miles couldn’t be with me.

It was a little too much, to be honest.

But now, as we settle everything of mine into his house, I see the lightheartedness accompanying Miles wherever he is. Though, I still see the alertness that hasn’t left him since last night at dinner. It wasn’t until we got settled for the night that Miles finally slowed down to wrap me in his embrace and allowed me to grieve the past as I told him more about my son.

“When this is all over, I’d like to meet him.”His words warmed me, but he still has no clue how much I would love to be able to freely visit with my little boy.

“Ma will be here in a couple of minutes to take you grocery shopping. I hate to admit this, but I’ve been livingoff everyone else’s food for the past couple of months or just eating at the bar.” He looks adorable while rubbing the back of his head. That isn’t where my gaze is settling, though. No, it’s dropping down to where his shirt has risen to reveal his lower abs. “Are you okay with going?”

“I’m capable of going grocery shopping on my own.” My arms cross, and my hip pops to one side.

“Not with your ex out there.” All kidding around leaves him instantly. His arms cross, bunching up his muscles.

He’s so damn handsome.

A surge of heat, much like what I felt the night I found him on Missy’s porch, ignites in me.

Not now.

I don’t care to be ordered around like this, but I have to let it go … for now. He’s only looking out for my safety, and I know exactly what Grant is capable of. Miles has no idea.

“Fine.” I’m the one to relent. I may have decided to work this out with him and my issues, but he needs to know where I stand with being ordered around. “But don’t get used to winning. I willnottake orders from you forever.”

“Don’t be like that, baby.” His finger tucks under my chin and pulls my face to him. “This is for your own good.” His kiss is short and sweet, just a taste of that spark between us and leaves my lips longing for more of his delightful pressure.

I feel like I’ve caved far too easily, but this feels right. No pain, no aches other than my stomach. I’m sure it will take some time to get past no longer being in constant torment.

I always thought of myself as a city girl, but standing here where the air is almost at its purest, the wind blowing aroundme, and the calm and quiet surrounding the two of us, I think I could get used to this real quick.

Miles’s Jeep is barely out of sight when Nina’s car replaces it. Begrudgingly, I head back into the house for my purse and the massive grocery list Miles and I compiled over breakfast.
