“You did all of this … for me?” She takes the three steps to me one at a time, in complete wonderous shock.

“Of course.” Meeting her at the bottom, I wrap my arms around her middle, careful of the little one growing inside, and carry her over to the table while looking up into her twinkling eyes. Her long hair creates a curtain around us, closing off the rest of the world. “You deserve the world, and if I can give it to you, I will.” Kissing her nose, I leave her to get into her seat and take my own across from her. “How was your appointment?”

Over our meal, which she eats faster than I do, she tells me every detail about her afternoon with Ma and Rylie. I can’t help but laugh again when she tells me about how vicious the woman who brought me into the world got with the lady at the front desk before they could go back. I shouldn’t expect anything less, though.

“Everything was good? Nothing wrong?” I was keeping my worry away from her, but now that this appointment is out of the way, I can ask.

“Everything is perfectly wonderful.” I feel her sigh.

“I’m sorry I wasn’t there.” The apology is almost forced. Yes, I wish I were there with her, but I also wanted to do this.

“It’s okay. There will be plenty to come, and I’m hoping to keep your mom at bay from now on.”

“She means well.” Reaching over, I capture her hand.

“I know, it was just a little intense.” She sags in her chair. I don’t miss the random glances she threw around the land surrounding us throughout dinner. I know she’s still worried, so I don’t want to say much to her. The stress isn’t good for either of them. Besides, I can smell and hear anything getting close. Kindof like the deer currently munching away on the field next to the house.

You’ll keep all of it as our burden?

For her, I would do anything.

I’d even allow myself to be tortured with the world’s most annoying song while chained up if it meant she’d be okay.

There are worse things out there.

“Oh! I almost forgot!” She’s up and rushing back into the house before I can blink. She comes right back out carrying something small. “Here.” Instead of returning to her seat, she makes her way onto my lap.

She has no idea what that move does to me.

Not only do I have her body pressed against mine but she also did it all on her own.

My hands tremble as I take the piece of paper from her. I’m not really sure what I’m looking at until I realize it’s an ultrasound.

Again, thank you, Macy.

“That’s the head, and right here is the heart.” She points down at the picture, but I can’t bring myself to look away from her. The joy that shines in her eyes captivates me. She looks so otherworldly; I want to drop to my knees and plead with her because I’m not worthy.

The desire to just hold her consumes me. With the ultrasound picture still carefully in my hand, I pull her closer. My nose goes straight into her hair before I lift and carry her over to the porch swing.

“I know I’ve said this before, but I love you, Alexa.” I don’t know where to place the picture where it will be safe frombeing blown away, so I slip it under me, then push her hair off her face and bring her closer to me. “I will doanythingto prove to you until you fully understand and love me in return.”

“Miles, I—” I press my lips to hers and devour what can only belong to the two of us. The rest of the world be damned.

Chapter Thirty-Two

Alexa

Magma, the earth’s core, whatever the hottest substance is on this planet we call home, has nothing on what is crackling between Miles and me.

My body presses into his, melding us into one being rather than two as our tongues tangle and dance with one another. His hands roam my body, caressing every curve as if he’s mapping it all out again. He doesn’t actually grab me in order to anchor the two of us together.

For that, my lust-consumed mind is grateful.

They glide back up and come to cup my face gingerly.

All my reservations I had three weeks ago have been banished by the man under me. His words, the looks he gives me, the space to come around on my own, and every little thing he likely doesn’t think I notice but I do have proven to me that Miles Fischer is indeed a good man.

Our lips press together and pull apart in a heated exchange.
