What should be one of the most incredible nights of my life has me calling my brother who I’m certain was just as busy with his own woman and going to rip my head off the moment he picks up the phone.

“What do you want, Miles?”Yep, he’s pissed. But when isn’t he?

Tough shit. This could affect his mate too.

“Don’t growl at me.” I don’t mean to snap, but this is fucking urgent, and he needs to quit being a bag of dicks to me every single time I call.

“Watch your tone,” he snaps back with equal force. Maybe a little more so with the whole alpha deal.

“Fuckin’ hell, Mase. He’s out here.” Scrubbing a hand down my face, I finish picking up what’s left of our meal and putting dirt on the fire I haven’t fed, considering …

“What?” I’m sure I wasn’t the only one to jump at that bark. “Are you certain?” I swear I can see him in my mind already pacing in front of the windows that look out his own backyard.

“Yes.” My jaw is growing tighter the longer I stay on the phone while also working to secure my home. “Now, I need someone here with Alexa so I can track down this motherfucker.” I’m all too aware she’s now sitting on the couch, her thumbnail in her mouth as she watches me work before I vanish back into the house with a sliding slam on the glass door.

“Brandon’s here with us. I’ll have him come out with me. Save time from waiting on Roper to emerge from his hideaway.” He’s back into general mode.

“Thanks. See you in a few.” Ending the call, I turn back to Alexa and find a blanket wrapped around her that most definitely wouldn’t have been found there a month ago.

“What’re you going to do?” Fuck, her voice quivers. Not in the way she was doing just a few minutes ago but out of fear that puts a different kind of fire in my blood.

I take a seat next to her, remove her thumb from her mouth, and place a kiss on the back of her hand. “I’m going to find and get him to go away once and for all.”

We’re going to end him.

“K-Kill him?” She stutters.

“What?” I balk. “No, not if I don’t need to, baby.” She needs to know I’m not that kind of creature. I’m nothing like him. Animals are different, but taking another werewolf’s life? I’m not sure.

Anything to protect her.

“I’m scared, Miles.” Her admission comes with her closing the distance between us.

“I know.” Pulling her onto my lap, I do my best to comfort her. “I’m not going to let anything happen to you. Mason and Brandon are on their way to help me track down the asshole. Brandon will hang out here with you while the two of us go. Why don’t you go take a shower and get in something comfortable?”

“I don’t want to leave you.” She burrows deeper into me.

Fuck, this is killing me. I want to stay right here, but at the same time, I need to make sure this douchebag never comes back and that she’ll be safe.

“I don’t want to go, but the bastard came onto my land, trying to get closer tomywoman, and I’m not going to allow that.” Finally, I get her to stand and kiss her deeply before I walk her to the bathroom to lock herself away just as Mason comes barging into the house with Brandon hot on his heels but strolling in while popping something he’s eating.

“Rylie?” I ask.

“She’s fine. But she insisted on hanging out in the living room watching both doors with a shotgun Miranda keeps asking to try.” There’s zero amusement in Mason’s explanation.

“Macy and the hellion are at your house?”

“Yep, and secure as we could make them,” Brandon supplies.

“Okay.” The two of them together aren’t anything anyone would want to mess with. Macy may seem sweet, but she’s the only one who can handle that troublemaker daughter of hers. “Alexa is in the bathroom. We’ll be back as soon as possible.”

“No worries. Just handle the fucker.” Brandon slams his fist into his open hand before rubbing it. “No one is getting close to her here.”

With that reassurance, I can squeeze his shoulder and head out the back door with Mason. We take off at a steady jog. Stamina is something we’ve never had to worry about. As much as my werewolf side is aching to come out and take over this hunt, I keep him at bay for now. This is my job for the time being.

Aside from shifting during the full moon, our other side can come out when we are threatened. I’m more pissed than anything, so my control over my other side is easy.

The scent of this lone stays strong through the back of the property and steadily grows stronger the closer we get to the timberline leading up into the mountain.
