“No, I’m good,” he calls back. “We were eating dinner at Mason and Rylie’s when Miles called.”

“Are they going to be okay over there? I wouldn’t put it past Grant to do something to them in order to get to me,” I ask, grateful I don’t have to shout for him to hear me.

“They’re fine. Rylie is a great shot, and Macy … well, I wouldn’t ever dare to get between her and Miranda if you get what I’m sayin’.” His laugh is actually a joyful one.

“Momma bear mode?” I ask.

“Exactly.” His response is immediate. “My wolf is saying more like momma wolf, but hey, most mothers are protective of their young.”

“That’s true.” I busy myself making a cup of tea. Hopefully, that will ease my nerves.

“Hey, if you don’t mind me asking, why exactly would Grant bother coming after you? He hasn’t been in your life for a long time, right?”

“I’ve been wondering the same thing.” My hands shake as I put the tea bag into my mug. “I had a son with him, one I did my best to keep a secret, and I can only guess he found out and is after me to get to him.”

God, I hope not.

“Well, we aren’t going to let that happen.”

“Thanks.” Looking around, I can’t seem to find my phone. I thought I put it on the counter when I picked up the water, but it isn’t there.

“Lose something?” Brandon appears in the doorway.

“I can’t find my phone. I think I might have left it outside.” I start to head to the door, but he cuts me off.

“I’ll go check. Besides, Derek and Roper should be here any minute. It’ll give me a chance to scent around.”

“Thank you.” I feel helpless just standing here doing nothing.

The door slides open just as I turn back to the stovetop and wait for the water to boil. I could have easily thrown a cup in the microwave and waited a minute or so, but I never thought it tasted right that way.

Rolling my neck, the floorboards behind me creak under Brandon’s weight as he comes back inside.

“Did you see it out there? It was likely on the table.”

He doesn’t respond.

“Brandon?”

Before I can turn around, there’s a pinch in my arm.

“You thought you could get away from me, you little ungrateful bitch? Think again.” Grant’s low, menacing voice sends a shock wave of ice throughout my body. He presses into my back, cold and wet as I try to fight him off. “I’m taking you, and then we’re getting my son.”

Sucking in a breath to scream only proves to drag me under. As I think of a way to break free, my vision darkens, and then there’s nothing.

Chapter Thirty-Five

Miles

My skin prickles as I make my way across the massive field. It expands from the base of the mountain to my back porch and the fields growing our last harvest for the year. I checked out all the small creeks that branch off the stream in the hopes of finding the son of a bitch, but there were no signs anywhere.

It’s almost as if he vanished, and hopefully, it was heading upstream into the mountain rather than finding a way to sneak around Mason and me.

As I come down the last slope, the field of home spreads out before me as I clear the timberline. Even in the darkened night, I can see the tall grasses and the wheat waving in the wind. I still can’t figure out where he could have gone. Something isn’t right, but I can’t quite put my finger on what.

The fucker is messing with us.

Yes, I figured that once I reached the water without Mason by my side. Grant did this on purpose. He separated us for a reason, which is why each step I take is on the highest level of being on guard.
