I saw it now.

The flames of rage in his green eyes.

Chapter 5 - Alexei

A sharp abrupt knock on the bedroom door traveled through the room and slipped into the bathroom.

I ignored it, turned around, faced the wall, and rinsed off the last soap suds on my neck.

The sound of water running down the drain amplified within the walls of the shower as I turned off the faucet. I threw my head back and combed my fingers through my hair. Wet strands stuck to my skin, and shimmering droplets rolled down my back.

My muscles tensed and released under the heat of the steam. Still...

I closed my eyes, inhaled, and gripped the wall so hard; that I thought my fingernails would break right through.

Again. Visions of her resurfaced. Surrounded by that pile of clothes with black smears of smoke on her face. So fragile, helpless, and weak.

The situation was more dire now; more than just dealing with Mike Collins.

I was stuck with his fucking daughter.

“Fuck.”

My palms slammed against the tiled wall, leaving an imprint between the gathered steam.

When her pink tongue swiped over her lips, before she blacked out, she’d croaked, “Stay away.” Like she would have rather been anywhere but there. She’d looked small under me and cowered like I was the devil himself.

That pink tongue, though...

An annoying itch ticked under my skin: why the fuck had the thought of her plagued my mind all night? It robbed me of my concentration, on everything else, and most importantly, finding her father.

I stretched my hand out and grabbed a towel from the rack.

Wrapping it around my waist, I left the bathroom.

A fresh breeze hit my skin, mingling with the warm flood of sunlight pouring in through the windows. I yanked the curtains shut, threw a plain white t-shirt over my head, and put on a dull pair of sweatpants.

Leaning against the wall, I perused.

Using the girl as leverage wasn’t a bad idea. The bastard didn’t know yet that we had his daughter. If we tracked down his whereabouts, contacted him, and threatened him to pay up in exchange for her, would he relent?

It might be worth trying, but I doubted Collins had a heart. We've gone too far in assuming that he left his family out of the game.

What an idiot! He left his fucking daughter behind.Fuck, she could have died last night!

I’d heard terrible things about the man. He was as slimy and selfish as the word itself. I blamed myself for underestimating him. If we successfully drew him out of his hiding hole, I knew what his fate would be.

Conflict tore through my entire being, spinning my thoughts to mush, and applying unwanted pressure in my chest.Damn it!

Whatever it was burning inside me, it needed a fucking release.

Another rapt knock came from the door.

“What?”

“The girl’s awake, boss,” came the muffled response through the door. I strode through the room, with a hand in my pocket, and opened it.

His head jerked backward, and he stared at me, wide-eyed.
