Chapter 6 - Vanessa

Monster.

That was the first word that swirled in my mind when I thought of him. When those cold green eyes bore into mine. How could something be so cold and soulless, be so hot, and vibrant at the same time?

He looked at me like I was nothing but an irritating pest he couldn’t wait to get rid of. Pierced deep into my soul, troubled my insides, and warned me of the many dangers that were associated with him.

Yet...

Yet nothing.I refused to acknowledge the lingering tug; the enigmatic pull I felt towards him. It was irrational. Senseless! Must have been the result of all the smoke I’d inhaled.

If infuriating and intimidating were a person, it would be him. He was the most arrogant and undeniably dangerous man I’d ever met. And it didn’t help that he was annoyinglyverygood-looking. That man!

I couldn't understand it; how did my life spiral downhill so fast? Just…how?

One moment, I stood with Carla, counting the donations for the children. Then, there was Jett. Sweet, sweet Jett. A man I would never, everget to know. Next, I stood in the warm living room, feeling happy and fulfilled, and minutes later, I watched the monster burn everything to the ground.

A sharp sting sizzled on my arm, right above my elbow. I brushed my thumb lightly across the fading black-purple bruise and hissed.

Who did he think he was?

I pulled my legs to my chest and fixed my chin between my knees.

I scoffed.

Funny. My kidnapper had more details about me than I did about him. I didn't even know his name.

The nerve of him. Talking to me like he knew anything about my life. Like could see my past and future. My eyes caught the shattered pieces of the brass lamp scattered across the wooden floorboard. Hours had passed but no one had come to clean up the mess.

Why would they? I could get my feet cut and bleed out for all he cared.

Maybe he did know my future.

It might have been my broken body or my head in the place of that lamp. I saw it; the unmasked desire to strangle the life out of me. The reason for his hesitation remained a big question mark.

I wanted to cry and scream. But he’d threatened to cut off my tongue and didn’t even blink. Anyone who could do that did not have a heart. And after watching him mercilessly murder those men, I knew he was not bluffing.

Sounds came from down the hallway. Thumps and creaks on the wooden floor and moans. It had been going on for a few minutes now. The soundtrack of lust and pleasure. I sighed.

I knew it was him. The aggressive thumps resembled his trademark. Violence. Duress. It didn't matter that I had known him for only a day; his presence grew strangely familiar at a quick pace.

“Yes…yes!”

Whoever she was, she was loud. And clearly enjoying herself.

Something heavy and unsettling dropped to my stomach. Would I ever experience such pleasure? I felt even more appalled. I didn’t want to give it a second thought but... I wondered about their relationship and, more so, why anyone would want to be with a man likehim.

I shook my head, sniffled, and wiped my eyes. Lamenting about his private life was the least of my worries and sobbing all day had not proved helpful. I had to think of an escape plan from this hellhole.

I straightened my legs and got out of bed, carefully avoiding the shards of glass on the floor.

More thumps and louder moans echoed. I gritted my teeth and walked over to the tall glass ceiling-to-floor door. Parting the curtains, I stepped out onto the small balcony.

A cool breeze swept my hair from the sides of my face. I gripped the cold railing. Pitch blackness with twinkling stars stretched out across the sky. If the situation were different, I could spend all night stargazing. The view was perfect from the first floor.

Almostperfect.

Below, bright yellow solar post lights lit the grounds, lining the trimmed hedges by the driveway. Seven of his men were outside.
