“TNT!” I shot at her. “Did you come here to pick a fight or have coffee?”

She smirked. “I don’t know. I spend all week breaking up fights. Maybe I’m ready to be in one myself.”

“Bring it,” Angela said.

“I didn’t come over here to break up your fight,” I told them. “So, if you’re going to go at it, you’re going to have to wait until after I leave.”

I was about to continue when suddenly, a fresh wave of nausea ran through me. It hadn’t been the first that morning, but it was by far the worst. I’d thought it was because I hadn’t had breakfast yet, but the thought of eating anything made me feel even sicker.

I almost rushed to the bathroom, but I knew there was no way I would make it. Instead, I grabbed the garbage can and vomited right there.

“Shit,” Angela said. “What the hell are you doing?”

“Clearly, someone is hungover,” Teresa said.

“I didn’t drink last night,” I said. “Since when do I ever drink enough to get hungover anyway?”

“Better not be pregnant,” Angela said.

I froze. I hadn’t even thought of that. I quickly did the math in my head, trying to remember when the last time I had my period was, and how it matched up with the time right before I slept with Alex.

“Oh my God,” I said, feeling like I could faint.

“What, are you?” Teresa gasped. “Cassie! When? How?”

“You know how the birds and the bees work,” Angela said. “What I want to know is who?”

They both exchanged a look, then as the realization hit them, Angela laughed.

“Did I seriously have to babysit that night a few weeks ago so you could hook up with her dad?” she asked.

“That’s not quite how it was intended, but stuff happened,” I admitted.

“Ow ow girl! Get some!” Angela said with another laugh.

“Wait, since when is it cool to hook up with our clients?” Teresa asked.

“If you saw this guy, you wouldn’t blame her,” Angela told her, but I cut in.

“How can I be pregnant? It was one time, and it was weeks ago. I’m not pregnant. I can’t be. Who gets pregnant the first time they hook up in like years?” I rambled.

“Evidently, you do,” Angela said. “And anyway, there’s a surefire way for you to find out.”

“Do you have a test on hand?” I asked.

“I do, in fact,” Angela said. “Since when am I the one who’s prepared for any of this and you two aren’t?”

She walked into the bathroom and quickly returned, handing me the pink tube.

“I don’t exactly carry around pregnancy tests,” Teresa said. “And we are at your house, so there’s that.”

“Would you please stop bickering while I do this?” I asked, trying to remain calm. “This is kind of important.”

“It is what it is,” Angela said. “It’s not like you’re going to have different results based on the conversation.”

“You know what I mean,” I called over my shoulder.

I closed the door for a small level of privacy, though I still had a ton of confidence it wasn’t going to come out positive. I had already convinced myself of a hundred different reasons why I was feeling nauseous. And after throwing up, I was already feeling better.
