“I want to make sure you didn’t leave them in a place where Lucy could get into them! It’s bad enough to slip me a drug when I had no idea you did. Do you really think it’s smart to make them into cookies and then leave our daughter unsupervised? What if she had gotten into them? How can we be sure she hasn’t?”

“Oh, come on,” Jordan said. “You were out like a rock. Do you really think if she had gotten into the cookies, she would be up and fine right now? It would knock her out along with you, and it didn’t. I can say it’s safe to assume she hasn’t.”

“I don’t want to just assume shit,” I snapped. “And when it comes to Lucy, I’m not okay with just assuming. Where did you put the damn cookies?”

“They’re on top of the fridge, geez,” she shook her head. “Why don’t you give me a little bit of credit here?”

“I don’t know, because you just drugged me?” I snapped once more.

“Daddy, why are you yelling?” Lucy asked. “It hurts my ears.”

“Sorry pumpkin,” I told her. “I’m just upset right now. I don’t like it when you are left alone.”

“When is Cassie coming back?” she asked. “I miss her.”

“She’s not,” Jordan said before I had the chance to reply to Lucy myself. “I fired her.”

“You have got to be shitting me right now,” I said, not even bothering to watch my own language. I was far too pissed off to even begin to try to control my tongue. I turned my attention back to Jordan.

“She stopped by this morning looking for you, so I told her she wasn’t going to be needed any longer,” Jordan said. “And she won’t. I’m back, and I’m taking care of Lucy.”

“You drugged me, and you fired the nanny,” I said, halfway to her, halfway to myself. “If you think for one second, I’m going to let you watch Lucy unsupervised, you have another thing coming.”

“You’re acting like you haven’t ever done weed before,” she rolled her eyes. “And you’ve let me take Lucy out for ice cream and stuff lots already. We were just going to go do some shopping while you were asleep. I figured when you passed out again after lunch, you were going to be down for the afternoon.”

I was on my way into the kitchen when I suddenly stopped.

“You put another batch of those damn cookies on my plate at lunch,” I said. I remembered how I had eaten it, and I started to feel a little less foggy. It wasn’t until after lunch that I started feeling really tired again, and I realized after eating another, I had been starting to feel the effects of the weed once more.

Since I had only had two, it was just enough to make me perk up during lunch, and then I was ready to pass out again afterward. It made perfect sense as I thought about it that way, and I whipped around, clutching Lucy to my chest.

“You were going to take her, weren’t you?” I snapped.

“What do you mean?” Jordan asked.

“Don’t play stupid, Jordan,” I yelled at her. “You weren’t going to take her shopping. That’s why you made sure I was drugged a second time at lunch. You wanted to make sure I was asleep and would stay asleep for hours. It’s a sheer miracle I woke up when I did, and God only knows how far you would have gotten with her.”

“Now you’re getting paranoid,” she said after a moment of brief hesitation. It was only a second, but it was enough for me to be certain I had figured out what she had been planning to do with Lucy. It made me sick to think of how far she might have gotten with her if I hadn’t woken up when I did.

And to think that she had gone so far as to fire Cassie meant she had ensured Cassie wasn’t going to be back early in the morning. It only led to my worry that I could have slept for hours if I had been under the influence of marijuana, and she could have put a lot of distance between the two of us.

“Get the hell out of my house!” I shouted. “Get out, now!”

“Have you lost your mind?” Jordan demanded. “I’m not going anywhere!”

“Yes, you are,” I yelled, holding Lucy with both arms now. She struggled to get down. She didn’t like it when anyone yelled, and she didn’t want to be held so close to me when I was so angry.

“I want to get down,” she cried. “I don’t like it when you yell.”

“I’m sorry, sweetie,” I told her. “Daddy just got scared by something Mommy did.”

“I still don’t like it,” Lucy struggled against me, so I put her down.

“Come to Mommy, baby,” Jordan said. “I’m not going to yell with you.”

“Don’t you dare,” I snapped, stepping in between before Lucy had the chance to move. “I’m not going to let you come near her. Not after what you pulled!”

“You can’t keep her from me!” Jordan shot back. “And if you try, I’m going to call the cops. What do you think is going to happen when they find out right from her that you were asleep all day, and they take your blood and test for drugs? You’re going to find yourself in a world of hurt, I can tell you that.”
