It was unlocked, so I let myself in. I no longer cared if I was going to be in trouble for letting myself into a house that wasn’t my own. My only thought was on Lucy and the fact she wasn’t going to be subjected to such a scene any longer.

“Cassie!” Lucy shouted when I walked into the kitchen.

She was standing behind her father, and he had his arms folded. Across the room from him was the same woman who had answered the door that morning. Her hair was now dry and styled, but she still wore the same shirt she had been wearing when she’d spoken to me.

“What are you doing here?” the woman demanded.

“Jordan!” Alex shouted. “This is my house, and I’m the one who is going to be doing the talking. Do you understand?”

“Cassie, Cassie!” Lucy cried. There were tears pouring down her cheeks, and I ignored both of the other adults in the room as I rushed to her, scooping her up in my arms.

“I don’t know what this is about, but you both should be ashamed of yourselves for having such an argument in front of a child,” I hissed at both Alex and the crazy woman standing across from him. “Children should never be subjected to adult issues, and that’s final!”

I kissed her on the cheek, and she wrapped her arms around my neck.

I noticed the expression on Alex’s face change from the moment I walked through the door. He at first had an almost ashen look, as though he couldn’t believe I was now being thrown into the mix of whatever he was dealing with. But, he also had a level of relief wash over him, especially when I took Lucy into my arms.

“I’m taking her up to her room. “You two can work this out, alone,” I announced. I didn’t care what they were arguing about. At the moment, I didn’t care. I was standing right in front of Alex, knowing I was pregnant with his kid while he had no idea. The only thing I cared about was taking Lucy away from the scene and putting her in a place where she was safe.

Alex didn’t argue with me, but Jordan stepped to the side, blocking the doorway I had to leave through in order to get upstairs. It was the only one in the room that led into the hallway toward the staircase, and she folded her arms across her chest, making it obvious she wasn’t going to move.

“Where do you think you’re going with my child?” she snapped. “You aren’t allowed to leave with her, and if you even try, I’m calling the cops!”

“I’m not leaving,” I said, using every ounce of self-control I had left. “I’m taking her out of the room and away from theconflict you are having. This isn’t the place for a child, and as her mother, you should want her away from it.”

“As her mother, you should want her away from it,” Jordan mocked me. “As her mother, I want you to put her down, and for you to get the fuck out of here!”

“Jordan!” Alex cut in. “Cassie is right, this isn’t the place for Lucy right now, and if there had been any way for her to be safe while I spoke with you, I wouldn’t have let her see this in the first place. Now that Cassie is here, she’s taking Lucy, so step aside.”

“You’ve got to be shitting me,” Jordan sneered. “You mean to tell me you have a hard-on for the nanny, too? Can you be any more cliché with your life if you tried? It’s sickening.”

“I would do anything for the good of my daughter, first off,” Alex snapped. “And I would do anything for Cassie, too. She is a far better woman than you are, Jordan, and better than you could ever hope to be. In fact, if you were half the woman she is, I probably never would have divorced your ass in the first place.”

Jordan opened her mouth, but closed it again, clearly dumbstruck. I couldn’t help but raise my eyebrows slightly at what he’d said. That statement alone was enough to clear up any question in my mind whether the two of them were working things out, and if that was what she was doing here. But I wasn’t going to say a word.

For as much as I wanted to make a snide comment to Jordan after the way she had treated me, I knew I would be no better than she was if I were to stoop to that level. I had to get Lucy out of the room, and that’s what I was doing.

“Step aside,” Alex told Jordan. “Step aside so Lucy can go up to her room.”

“Make me,” Jordan said. “If you put a finger on me, I’ll scream.”

“I won’t touch you,” Alex said. “I’ll just smash your phone.”

That was the moment I realized her phone was sitting on the kitchen table, and he moved to grab it.

“Don’t you dare!” Jordan shouted, moving away from the door to snatch it up before he had the chance to get it. I took the moment to dash through the door myself, and I heard Jordan screaming something about calling the cops behind me. Alex was arguing with her once again, keeping her from following Lucy and me up to the bedroom.

“I’m glad you’re here,” Lucy said as she clung to me. “I don’t like it when they fight.”

“Don’t worry, baby,” I told her. “I’m not leaving until I know everything is okay, I promise.”

“Cross your heart?” Lucy asked.

“Cross my heart,” I said with a smile. She laid her head on my shoulder as we reached the top of the stairs, and I headed straight into the bedroom before closing the door behind me. I wished there were locks, but supposed with Alex keeping Jordan downstairs, I really didn’t need to lock it behind me anyway.

But the shouting had started up again on the floor beneath us, and with the threats Jordan was making, I knew the only way we were going to get rid of her would be to call the police. Alex had told her more than once to leave and she’d refused, and I wasn’t sure if he would have the guts to make the call himself, so I decided to do it.

Lucy sat on the bed next to me, quietly playing with her dolls. She’d stopped crying once I had taken her in my arms, and now she was clearly starting to feel better. I just wanted to get the police to the house and have Jordan removed as quickly as possible.
